VA The FriZ's quest to regain his not so long post youth...

Hey guys, My name is Brian... I have a variety of history with "toys"..

1992 240sx, Silvia Front, Redtop, FMIC, Blah, Blah... This was a gorgeous, well rounded car with AC and power steering. Not some Drift battle jalopy. I really enjoyed it.. I got too anxious and sold it... oh well...

1996 M3
1988 E30 325is
2004 STI - Fairly nice build... Sold earlier this year
1969 Pontiac Firebird Coupe
1998 Jeep XJ... 3 linked, air locked, geared, armored
1994 FZJ80 Land Cruiser
2001 Jeep Cherokee
1988 Ranger
1980 K20 Chevrolet Truck
1974 Fiat Spider
1972 Fiat Spider
1995 Taurus Police Package
2001 Sebring (gag)
2001 GTI vr6
1986 300E Mercedes....

currently.. with my Firebird and Sti sold... we have

1998 4runner, 3.4, small lift, lots of OEM refreshing. This is my daily
2003 Forester XS Premium, Lifted, 28" All terrain tires, Thule Racks... Wifes Daily
1978 Kawasaki KZ650 SR... This is my only toy now that the Firebird is gone...

I sold the firebird two days ago for $20,000.00....

Now.. I'm looking to go back to my roots... Couple of cars are on the list

1. FD3S, I've wanted an FD for about 8 years and never had the guts to pull the trigger.. I've always been concerned with reliability.. I'm REALLY about to do it though.
2. S14 240sx. I loved my S13... Everything I hated about it concerned the Interior.. an S14 would remedy that. I would thoroughly enjoy building another. It would be RB25 or S14 SR20 powered...
3. SW20 MR2 turbo... I've always had a soft spot for these guys...
4. IS300 or SC300 with a 2JZGTE/1JZGTE swap... LOVE the IS's
5. Turbocharged E36 M3...

The FD is really on the top of my list. I love them. I'm in the process of browsing the classifieds, but I cant post until I have my post count... SOOooo I figured I would Introduce myself and say "Hi."

Background...
I have a B.A. in History and a Doctorate of Jurisprudence...
I whitewater Kayak (new river gorge, woohoo!!)
I live in the mountains of Southwestern Virginia.. Some of the Best Roads around..
I hate drifting... just hate it
I love Autocross and HPDE events
Married, one kid, and another on the way!
Trusty Dog, and a mischievous cat....

Nice to meet you guys!!

Ill post some pictures of the old rides shortly!

Thanks
-Brian

Car:
1996 M3 Coupe
Luxury Package
Autothority Cold Air Intake
Autothority Chip
Remus Exhaust
Bilstein Shocks/Struts
Eibach Prokit Springs
Goodyear F1 GSD3's
Bimmerworld Rear Shock Mounts

Powerflex Polyurethane Rear Trailing arm Bushings
Powerflex Poly Rear subframe bushings (Expensive job in labor!!)
Power Flex Rear Trailing Arm Bushings / New Arms
Power Flex control arms/bushings
and some more.....

This car was the best handling car I owned.... but GAWD.. It seemed like something was always broken... The Rear Shock mounts were replaced like 4 times in 6 years.... the RTABs were replaced multiple times... The damn subframe bushings ripped out... Waterpump failed... It ate rear tires due to constant suspension problems... etc... But man, when it was right, it was RIGHT.

I loved the broad torque band... the motor had power EVERYWHERE. The interior just fell ALL TO PIECES... cardboard wrapped with leather.. it looked nice, but it wasn't built to withstand even Daily Driving duty... The Driver's seat leather wore like crazy, the bolsters collapsed.. Finally the seat just broke. Bought for 11k... sold for 4k... SAD day...

This car was GREAT... but in the end... it was just an Impreza with a big motor that looked good... The only thing underneath that was any beefier were the front axle shafts and the Front Lower control arms, which were cast aluminum (sadly.. where people bent their stamped steel LCAs.. people with Cast Aluminum arms would just bend the chassis mounts instead)... Everything else on the car was Dinky... Tie rods, ball joints... WEAK wheel bearings...

I really despised having a performance car that was AWD, especially having a limited slip in the front... The steering feel was TERRIBLE.. My car was very well rounded.. went through 4 different suspension setups.. Could NEVER get rid of the Bump Steer and the ridiculous "bounce" that these cars are known for.

I manage a 900 member Subaru Club based in NC/VA, I have rode in hundreds of cars... mine was by far the best riding setup I had felt and it still had terrible bump steer and suspension bounce. It was just inherent in the design of the suspension...

Not to mention, I got sick of replacing axle seals and valve cover gaskets.... SOOO I sold it...

Next came this thing... I wanted to get something that wasn't going to depreciate... and well I ended up with a 1969 Firebird... I liked the car, and it handled remarkably well for an old muscle car with Heavy Duty Sways front and rear, new springs and shocks, poly bushings everywhere, subframe connectors, and a quick ration IROC steering box.... BUT.. it couldn't handle the abuse... So I sold it two days ago... Made 5,000$ on it, so I can't complain!!

The car is a 1969 Firebird Coupe
PHS Documented, Originally Verdoro Green, Now Black.
67,000 Original Miles
Original Numbers matching Motor, Non HO Pontiac 350
Muncie M20 4 Speed (Originally a 3 speed Column shift Manual, one of 8464)
Hurst Shifter
Edelbrock Intake
Edelbrock 4 Barrel 600CFM carb (originally a 2 barrel)
Crane 272-2
New Seals
Ram Air III Exhaust Manifolds
Dual 2.5 Aluminized Exhaust Piping
Flowmaster 40 Series Mufflers (x2)
New Radiator
Dual PermaCool Electric Fans
10 Bolt Rear end
Eaton Limited Slip
3.08 gears
Front Heavy Duty Sway Bar with Poly Bushings
Rear Sway Bar
New Springs Front
New Springs Rear
New Ball Joints
New Tie Rods
New Subframe Bushings
Subframe Connectors
IROC Quick Ratio Steering Box
Stainless Steel Brake Lines
Disc Brakes Front Conversion (originally nonpower drums)
Power Brake Conversion
Stainless Fuel Lines
New Seats
New Door Panels
New Carpet
New Dashboard
New Headliner
New Dash pad
New Visors
New Wiring Harness for the Entire car
Hushmat ExTreme From the Firewall to the rear seat.
Gauges Rebuilt,
Volt, Oil Pressure, Water Temp, and Tachometer
Original Floor Pans completly Solid
New Rear Quarters, done very well
American Racing Torque Thrust Wheels
I'm sure the list gets longer. The car came with a 3 Ring Binder, STUFFED full of receipts, documentation, literature, etc.. Car even came with the Original 1969 Owners Manual. She also came with about 15 1st place Show Plaques and a few "sponsors choice"

NOW... I also had a crazy, 3 linked Jeep Cherokee.. This was my PRIDE AND JOY for about 10 years... I LOVED this thing.. brought my little girl home in it, met my wife in it.. everything.. but a 4x4 was not meant to be built with a unibody structure... It would have cost me about 5 grand to get it back right, so it wasn't worth it... I bought a 1998 4runner to replace it...

SOOOoooo Here we are...

I am looking to reclaim my youth... Im not that old, but I want another car I am TRULY passionate about, just like my old S13 Silvia(240sx)

I am really tempted by SW20 MR2 Turbos.. I love those things.. Im also really tempted by an IS300 Sedan or an SC300 coupe... EIther with a 2JZGTE or a 1JZGTE.... Especailly the IS300.. I always thought they were great looking cars...

BUT.. The top two candidates are an S14 240sx (97-98 Kouki cars) or an FD3S..

The S14 would either get an SR20DET (the s14 variant with Variable Intake Cam Timing) or an RB25DET skyline GTS-T motor. The RB swap would cost about $1000-$1500 more initially, but the car would be worth more in the end, and have more power capabilities. However, the SR swap would be RIGHT, for one thing, being the real silvia motor.. and that extra $1500 would make an S14 SR motor utterly destroy an out of the box RB. My old SR powered car took a lot of abuse and never complained.

An S14 would be everything my S13 wasn't, and I KNOW I would love it. A properly built and maintained car is easily worth $20,000 if it is a 97-98 Model Year. One with an RB25 would be worth $20,000+ ... and like I said, I KNOW I would love it.

NOW, the whole reason I, and WE, are all here.

When I decided to build my S13, I wanted an FD3S
When I bought my M3, I wanted an FD3S
When I bought my STi, I wanted an FD3S
When I bought my Firebird, I wanted an FD3S...

Now, I still want an FD3S..
Im just rambling now... but WOW, I can't tell you how torn I am on what to get!!!

FDs are reliable if you don't F with them. Leave it stock, except some reliability mods, and don't track it and you'll be rewarded. Fritz Flynn in Charlotesville usually has a couple nice ones for sale in varying price ranges. Shoot him a line and i'm sure he can hook you up.
