85 GSL SE first Rotary

Hello everyone,

Picked up 85 GSL-SE today. Looking forward to learning and making this gem shine again. She isn’t that bad. I just want to make her better. She has 166xxx miles. I think it’s a solid car to start with. I will update things as I go. If you have any recommendations on sources to get parts that would be great. She has some broken interior plastics and needs some new maroon carpet lol. Hope you enjoy as much as I do.

Thank you for the information. I read the rules about the classified section. Can’t wait to unlock it. I will also check out rock auto.com. So I did a CARFAX on it. Looks like I am the fourth owner. Has always been a Pacific Northwest car. Started life is Vancouver Washington. No records of it being in a car crash.
So I have already been reading on the this model in the Gen 1 section. I think I’m going to try and keep it as stock as I can. Someone threw its history has put on a racing beat exhaust system on it. This looks to be era appropriate. So I will try and leave it. I am going to remove all but one sticker. From What I was reading it was a factory sticker. The rear end started to Make a clunking sound. So I am looking in to that first. I already found and ordered a rear wiper arm as this ones is missing. I’m excited to learn all I can. I love the first gen lines. I will look at making a build thread. Won’t be exciting, as I think this gem should be kept a classic beauty.

Welcome to the forum!! That's a great SE you have there!! Looks like the front seater were reupholstered in cloth at some point. The door panels indicate that the front seats were leather at one point. Check your idler arm bushing as it's most likely deteriorated and causing the front end clunking.

As for parts, here are more websites that you can check out:

www.mazdatrix.com
www.atkinsrotary.com
Racing Beat - Mazda Performance Specialists

The sound is coming from the rear passenger side. I was thinking drive line joint or rear end. The heat shield is also damaged. So it could just be the drive line hitting the shield. I will dig into more today.
Thank you for the interior knowledge. I would like to find out what the car came out of the factory as. I found the decoder on the site. Just wasn’t very detailed. The hood has flaking on the edges and you can see red. So I need figure out is the hood was just replaced or it start life red. I will keep everyone updated as I start to dig into it.

So first update on this little gem. Appears the rear end need to be rebuilt/replaced. If anyone has a kit they used or a place to look that would awesome.
