Why Aluminum Hoods SUCK

Why Aluminum Hoods SUCK
1. You will first have to waste a lot of your time finding one, then it is probably a few hundred miles away, so you have to drive and get it (because it can't be shipped), or get your friend to pick it up for you when he is in the area. and of course you will have to pay more for it than you wanted to.
2. even if you do find the same colour of hood, there are probably scratches and what not that will force you to repaint it. oh, and not to mention that these damn hoods are so soft, than rain will dent them. so you have all these dents to fix up. so, you spend a day prepping the hood for repaint, taking in all the cancer-inducing fumes from body filler and primer.
3. to do a good paint job, you find a friend with an HVLP gun (because a body shop will charge you some stupid amount of money just to paint a hood). you go out and spend more than you want to on base coat/clear coat paint, but it's ok because it will turn out really nice.
4. paint the hood. more sweet sweet cancer-inducing fumes to breathe in. this HVLP gun really does spray nicely! too bad you are not a professional painter, and making a lot of newb mistakes. "oh look, a bug just landed on the fresh paint"..."so THAT'S why they call it Orange Peel"..."did you remember to clean out the gun, because you just sprayed a colour we didn't put in there"....
5. your stock steel hood ends up still looking better...but that's ok, because you saved like 25 lbs, yay!
Moral of the story: don't be like me. if you already have a stock Al hood, consider yourself lucky. otherwise, don't bother...spend the money on a gym membership instead. ha.

bah i found an N/A aluminum hood for $25 locally (guy was moving and needed to sell it quick). It's been sitting in my garage for a little while but I can get it painted and fully reconditioned for like $250-300, and I found an aluminum hood latch for $15 shipped.

i live up in middle of nowhere, in Canada. aluminum hoods are a little rare to find, or you have to travel far.
all i am saying is it is not worth it. people make too big of a deal. spend your money/effort somewhere else on the car...

Or you can buy a respirator mask at Home Depot/Lowe's for $25, and go to bed without that happy feeling of icepicks being jammed into your eyesockets when you come down off the reducer fumes I can buy a lot of those little respirator masks with the two filters on them for cheaper than my insurance deductible on a new set of lungs. Your results may vary

haha, yeah. i considered the cheap rattle can method. but i mean, my steel hood still looks great, and i didn't want to downgrade that just for some weight savings...which ended up happening anyways.
although, pretty much any base coat/clear coat job, even a bad one, through a HVLP gun will still look better than spraying it with cans...just not factory good.
and yes, i had a mask. but, should have probably had a respirator.

I bought a cheap aluminum hood too, but it wasn't that hard to fix up, two sawhorses, a couple of body hammers and dollys, a big crescent wrench and some bondo and all is right with the world. The only really hard part was the scoop insert cracked in two places. But I can buy a carbon fiber scoop insert for as much as I spent on the hood though! :-P

i'm sorry i'm not a professional painter like you. i'm sure the first time you painted with a gun you got it perfect.
i wasn't painting indoors, so the fumes weren't as bad as if i was. but you don't have to tell me to wear a respirator, i know that. but, circumstances dictate certain actions. i don't plan on painting like that again anytime soon...
i hope you are trying to be funny. this thread is just me venting. you don't have to be a ***** about it...

lol.
man I found my aluminum nonturbo hood on ebay for $28 and bought it although it was 8 hours away, each way! ouch! but turns out the guy was working on a house 4 hours closer to me so we met up and I got the hood for that cheap! stopped in at the Niagra Falls casino to make my gas money back and the trip was virtually free... nice! looked like dents on it but when I picked it up it was just a big bird **** the guy never cleaned off... lol.
paint? ha, flat black rattle can rules!
