If so, then they're not original factory sill plates. The originals are aluminum.

I've got an original 1993 Accessory/Option booklett that were given to prospective buyers. It lists the optional "Genuine Mazda Accessory" sills as S/S. l'll post the literature tomorrow.

Well, it says they're stainless steel, anyway. I can see how someone could make that mistake because of the appearance, but the dead giveaway is the weight.

My 1995 came from the dealership with the sill plates, and I know for a fact that they're aluminum, since I had the RX-7 embossed logo removed and had them polished.

Well, if you're right.....then Mazda could quite possibly have a class action lawsuit waiting to be filed under the Deceptive Trade Practice Act and for False And Misleading Advertising. (j/k )

No but seriously, S/S can be fabricated in thin sheet form and can also be polished, can it not??? How did you arrive at your conclusion?

Ooops. Just read where weight was the determining factor. Interesting. About how much more would a S/S sill weigh than the aluminum sill?.

1) Stainless steel doesn't produce black oxidation like aluminum does when you use metal polishing compound on it, 2) the sheet metal specialist who massaged the embossed RX-7 logos out said they were aluminum, 3) I originally had them clear anodized (see picture below) before I decided I wanted them polished, and you can't anodize stainless steel to my knowledge, 4) they're not rigid enough to be stainless (you could easily bend one in half with your hands), and 5) they weigh almost nothing. Even thin gauge stainless would weigh more.

Perhaps the most evident truth teller is their ability to scrath so easily. I don't think S/S, regarless of it's thickness, would be susceptible to surface scrathing.
