Where to get a paint job????
I went to a place localy by me (ELECTRO BAKE) they quoted me $1,882.27 for striping the old paint where its really fadded and sanding the stuff that is still decent and 3or4(cant remember) coats 2or3 paint, 1 with clearcoat mixed in. Im not sure but that seems a little high to me??? Where have you guys gotten paint jobs and prices??? Iv heard macco is CHEEP but there jobs kinda suck.
Thanks alot
Thanks alot
maaco uses refrigerator paint thats why it chips off so easy also maaco body guys are limited to only 30 minutes of prep time regardless of cars condition. please dont go to maaco . just pay the money out . do it right or dont do it at all.

Try to talk to a few people in your area about which is good for paint and who isn't.

No macco was already out of the question, i just knew they were the cheepest but the worst. I just thouht 1,800$ for no body work just sanding, painting and then a coat of paint and clear coat mixed was a little high.
1,800 sounds fairly reasonable. Prices will fluctuate quite a bit depending on the area you live in too.
If you want to save some money, do the stripping and sanding yourself and take it to them for painting. Prepping the car for painting is very labor intensive and it adds a lot to the cost of painting the car. Although some places will not let you do the prep work yourself, especially if they have some sort of warranty... they don't want you messing up and blaming them for it.

if they are going to strip the paint off and respray it 1800 sounds LOW to me if it is going to be a good job. Expect to pay 2k+ to have a well known and respected shop strip and repaint your car right. Save money by doing as much work yourself as possible, as boring as it is you can sand your car yourself and save BIG money. I plan on getting a few of my friends to help me sand my car to metal in the spring so I can get it painted right finally. The previous owner had it repainted the worst way possible, not only did they apply the paint wrong but they sprayed it right over the original red (with black no less) but they didnt even mask it right and sprayed clear coat everywhere even on the turnlamps (on top of that there is hazing, orange peel, and discolouration)
If your paint is bad like mine expect to have to pay a lot to get it done, im looking at a quote of 1500 - and thats with me doing all the sanding and prep work and having the guy doing the paint a personal friend of my familys. Paint can be done hella cheap but dont expect it to look perfect, I myself cant stand it unless the paint is absolutely flawless though
Good luck with the paint situation!!

great topic, im also in need for some new paint..
i mean my paint is not horrible, its actually good but on the side skirts its chipping from age i guess and on most parts of the car has ALOT of swirls..but those can only been seen when light directly hits it like a spot light or a bright sun..its sorta hard to explain but if light directly hits it, and you look at it from the side or an angle, you will see the swirls..i really hate that, it makes the car look ugly when people look at it or something. LOL
thats why im gonna ask around, maybe they can just buff it out or something..if not, ill paint the whole car..

My plans are the same as yours, do as much of the labor yourself and have a friend paint it.
well mine is fadded pretty bad on the roof and hood so he said that would have to be sanded down quite a bit but the sides of the car would just have to be sanded a little to get the clear coat off then sprayed with paint. so the whole car isnt even being striped all the way and I though that the propper way is to spray just clear coat on after the paint not a paint clear coat mix??? and im already gonna fix all the little dings myself so i figure ill sand it as well.
dont overlook proper procedure when trying to do the work yourself like sanding, the sanding is the most important part of the paint job, be sure to get exact instructions from whoever is painting the car as far as sanding goes
most of the time a shop will not get involved in a paint job if they dont sand and prep it.

yes I agree - it really varies on a case to case basis and depends more or less on what you want to do. Some people (lime myself) need to get the paint completely stripped to metal but if you arent stripping all the paint off ask the guy who is painting it what kind of grit to use, wetsanding, etc. etc. It is very easy to sand off more then you wanted if your going to just try and remove the clear coat or something like that and then your screwed!
I think im gonna try and do all the sanding and prep work and then paint it myself!!! my brother use to work at a body shop and i figure if i mess up the paint ill sand it again and pay to get it painted.
Had any one done this and advice from anyone???

You can't knock Maaco as a franchise, knock the individual shops. I had one of my cars painted at the Newark Delaware Maaco about 5 years ago and the paint still looks fantastic to this day. It's not the shop that does the good or bad jobs, it's the people inside them. That goes for any other buisness also. If you got one bad chicken nugget from McDonalds, would you stop going for good and tell everybody else not to go? I doubt it....
Just like anything else, you get what you pay for. Half the battle is prep work - if the prep work is shitty, the paint job will be shitty. I suggest doing as much of the prep work as you possibly can, that way it'll be up to your standards.....

I felt that $5600 is a little high, but you definately get what you pay for, and Rocky's work looks top notch on all his other work.
