Whats involved in a paint job

Whats involved in painting a car its a 84 GS, im talking prepwise, my buddy said he would spray it but i gotta do some prepwork first. I was thinking I gotta sand the old paint off, which is flaking a little. What grits would I use. What would need to be removed? What would I mask up?

finally my subject area. Mask everything and remove all the moldings... Used a 24 grit to take it all the way to the metal, and then an 80 grit to scuff the metal. Pound the dents out, and hope you dont have ot fill anything. Hope this helps. could always take it to a body shop to get it done. my dad taught me.

Unless you really know how to do it right, the alternative method has three basic steps:

1. Drive car to body shop.
2. Leave car at body shop.
3. Pick car up after it's done.

Seriously, though, you're flirting with trouble if you don't know what you're doing. It's not as simple as a lot of people think. You have to have the right equipment, the right chemicals and the right environment to do the job. Those who have spoken about doing it themselves either knew exactly what was going on or they did the job and will experience paint problems down the road.
