What to use to clean brake dust?

I'm trying to clean off my brake dust off my rims. The problem is that is all caked up and dry so is hard to remove. I try wax and it helped a bit but I was wondering if there is a better thing. I was wondering if CLR would clean it off with out damaging the finish specially the polish lip.

Aluminum bright... took 10 years or more off my GSL fims, works great. You can find it a Napa or most likely Auto Zone or related stores.

Does it damage the finish? My rims are powder coated in the middle and polished with clear coat on the lip.
