i believe all the idiot lights coming on means that there's a low voltage signal being sent by the computer. Could be an alternator problem. Are they all still on, or did they go off after shutting down and restarting?

make sure you get the battery tested. It could be that the battery is old and need to be replaced with a new one..

since you said about the battery dying and being recharged, I'd say low voltage is definately the problem. If you're still getting the lights, I'd just get a new battery. Or if you have another good battery around, try that and see if it fixes it. If not, then I'd start looking at the alternator, alot of places test them for free.

Is your alternator belt still there? All the idiot lights went on on my T2 when the alternator belt decided to take a permanent vacation.

in a pinch you can use pantyhose as a replacement belt. that's what i did when my alternator belt snapped. tied it on, drove back to work, home, to three different parts stores, and home. worked like a champ.
the lady's at walgreen's love you too.
