What do you think is the largest LCD screen that can fit in the dash?
I want to install a carputer into an FD, with an LCD screen in the dash. I would flush mount it, fill and sand, and make it look factory, more or less.
Whats the largest screen that people have put in an FD? I was thinking about relocating the ac controls, and installing a screen in portrait mode, to get something bigger.
From what I see, it looks like an 8" diagonal lcd would be the largest possible, mounted vertically in that space, with hvac controls moved to the center console. But I really want to install a 10.4"... wondering if that was possible.

Why? The car was designed to look like a classic sports car on the inside-why ruin that look? Also remember putting the HVAC controls on the center console has it's downsides if you like to rest your elbow there.

Well... for all the cool things that a carputer can offer.
I'm not a fan of invasive setups at all... I would make it look as clean and factory as possible.
I think that most likely I will be installing it landscape mode, to fill the double din space. This wont look much different than the stock setup.. in fact it will be even cleaner.

Str8Down, could you tell me more about your setup?
What size screen is that, and who makes that unit?
It looks like it is controlling a carputer from whats on the screen, but I've never seen one with so many buttons.

Oh yeah I've been a member at mp3car for a while - but I've just never seen that screen. I'm no stranger to high end audio installations or computers - but I am a newbie to their integration. But I'm very excited about it.
I just wanted to use the largest screen possible molded to the dash - vertically mounted if I had to even.

Nope, no Nav yet. Still waiting, I will have it Day 1 when it does come out. A little dissappointing though, it's going to be CD based. WTF is that? That is like 1990's technology.

And for my qusetion.......I like the look of it, not too flashy and does keep a stock appearence.
#1) how do you play CD's, does it flip down or something?
#2) can you get one that size and look without the computer stuff. Just the radio, CD and such?
#3) I really like the stock look but if my bose was to give out, could I install this and still run the rest of the bose system(speakers and wave system)?
I know #3 sounds dumb...why buy an expensive unit for stock components, but im into crisp clean sound. So I would rather keep the bose system then change over to bass pounding components. Plus i like the look of the wave system in the hatch HAHA

Rosen R6500's are around $1K on ebay and 1400 retail.. Its DVD/CD/MP3 double din unit. its 6.5 inch screen slides down to show disc opening.
I think its an awesome unit.. I been looking at one ever since Str8Down posted this awhile back. I just can't drop $1K right now.. Maybe after I sell some wheels and stuff..

No it's not Turbo'd
The bose system just takes a different line out voltage than traditional amps, and if you were to create a true car-puter, that has a sound card you'd be able to controll the voltage out of the outputs, which are a lot lower than speaker levels out of a head unit... and amplifying that signal should be a lot easier than reducing it.... the question is are your bose amps still worth a damn !?

Dunno, I'm installing my screen in the doubble DIN slot, and then the CDR-DVD-ROM is going in the glove compartment.. since most of the time I'll be listening to MP3's or Radio, so no need to swap discs... and with WI-FI there's no need to use the DVD to add data to the system, it's strictly for DVD movies, and for the occasional impulse CD from Best Buy that I want to listen to NOW !
I'll try to take pictures and do a write up as I start installing this, as I have just rescently aquired all the parts I need to make this happen.... allthough I still need to replace all the speakers etc.. in the R1 with new stuff, and that needs to happen before the headunit goes in...

DCrosby,
I'm interested to see your new set up.. Sounds very cool. I tested my EzGO ultra small PC about a year ago in my FD with Sony 7 inch flip screen.. but the quality wasn't that great.. it was ok for watch movies but hard to read the screen.. So, I pulled it out..
There is a guy in Tenn. who recently purchased an FD who's going to put his car computer from his miata in.. He said he has 7" touch screen with excellent resolution. He's running his datalogit and now working on a switch that will boot and safely shut down his computer (PC).
I think he also told me that he's running PC software based navigation system running..
I'll ask him to hop on here..

hey everyone,
this unit seems to be everything anyone would want.. its practical, stock looking, bla bla... BUT...
1) what about anti-theft protection? is that screen removable or something? or does it sit there and scream "come and get me" ?
2)dvd player is cool.. yes but very few would watch movies in that thing... does it play mpg/mpeg files? i'd love to burn a **** load of .mpg music video clips on a dvd and listen to them all day without watching all the time...
