Unhappy what causes a blown amp?

The guy I bought my fd from said that just after he advertised it to sell it the amp blew in the stereo system. He said he removed the fuze so it wouldn't cause anymore damage. What would cause the stock amplifier to blow? Do you think it's an electrical problem I should be worried about? I just replaced my main and ignition switch and I was thinking whatever caused the amp to blow caused my other problems too. I still get sound out of the front speakers so does this guy really know what he is talking about? Forgive me if this has been posted before... I did a search and found nothing. Any responce would be great or a link too for that matter. Thank you for you time!

I guess it all depends on what blew. Usually I think of blowing the output stage by running into too low of a load. Of course, if you have problems with the power being supplied, something else in the amp may have blown. However, you say you still get sound out of the speakers...what do you mean by that exactly? Does it appear to be working properly? If so, then the amp is not blown. Maybe he just blew a fuse, didn't know why, so he left it out to prevent something else from letting go?

I don't know jack about the stock system. I still get sound (music) out of the front speakers but it's crappy. It's got tons of static but I get nothing out of the back two speakers. I think my antenna has to do with the quaility of the sound coming from the front speakers since I can't even get my local channels (they come in everywhere in my other car even in tunnels and hills) to come in clear. My power antenna won't go up and down any more but I know that wouldn't case the crappy reception. There must be a loose conection in the wireing inside the car. I don't care much about the radio since I always play CD's. I don't know what you mean by running too low of a load (like I said audio is not my area of expertise). Not only that the car stereo has been the way it is since I bought it. It hasn't bothered me since I have plans of putting in a complete system new decks and everything. I was just worried that there may be a major electrical problem I should get fixed. That's pretty much my main concern. I don't mind not having a radio since I love listening to my car when I drive. Thank you for your help. I hope I answered some of your questions.

It's apparently fairly common for the bose speakers to loose their amps as they get older. If you want to repair the amp and save a lot of money over replacing the system check out www.carstereohelp.com, they do repair work and warranty it. I've used them and I was completly happy with the results. If you're already planning to replace the system anyway I wouldn't worry about it. I'd be surprised if you had any major electrical problem with the car. Hope that helps some!

Yeah that is a relief. I would have found it hard to believe something was serioulsy wrong. Yeah I'm not even going to bother fixing it since I want a much better system in it anyway. I appreciate your help so much. I was really worried about the electrical not so much about the system. Thank you!

n2trbl,

By too low of a load I meant for example running speakers in parallel, which halves the load seen by the amp, or running speakers that are themselves of lower load than speced for the amp in question.

The antenna stuck down could certainly affect poor reception. What happens when you play CDs? Do you still get poor sound from the fronts an nothing from the rears?

For what its worth, it doesn't really sound like a general electrical system problem to me, so if you're going to replace the system anyway, I say go for it.
