Which true HID kit is best??
I already have the Hella headlamp conversion on my T2 and it has a much better pattern than the old stock sealed beam setup. I have the PIAA Plasmas in there right now, and they work pretty well, but i want to go to true HID with the ballasts
So which brand/kit is best to upgrade my H4 Hella housings with? I want high and low beam as well. Who knows about this stuff?????
Thanks
Graham

WOW, those are WAY brighter than my PIAAS!
Do they have hi and low beam?
Where did you get them?
How much?
Thanks for the pics. Anyone else have a different system that they would like to share about?

I don't know how much work you want to do but I would think OEM HIDs are the best hands down. I would get set of projectors, bulbs, and ballast from a BMW and retrofit them. With the FC housing you won't get the best lighting no matter what you do from what I read. I would get rid of the housing all together and start with something fresh and up to date

Yeah I was wondering about the kelvin ratings.
Which rating would be ideal? I've heard that 4300k gives the best illumination. I might be in for a good set of 6000k though, but I'm just wondering if that's too blue?
Cops around Vancouver, BC are **** about blue lights. Don't wanna attract more attention as I get enough of that as it is.

4100-4500k are the brightest. anything higher uses a blue filter to artifically raise the color temp. filtering light means blocking light so you get less output. blue also causes more more glare because night adapted vision is more sensistive in the blue end of the spectrum.
herblenny i gotta sya you are very wrong about glare. projector beams have a much sharper cutoff and lower glare than reflectors.

Also, 6000k do not have any blue-ish filters.. also, it has hint of blue.. but mostly white..
Like I say.. I could be wrong.. I'm not an engineer or anything.. just pointing out my view..

for one thing anyone putting hid in the stock housing is wasting money and being dangerous to other drivers. by using the sotkc housing all you get is brighter CRAP. in fact its worse than stock because the reflector wasnt even designed for that bulb. so yeah its brighter but its not what it should be if you got real HID housings.
and two if you remove the metal shield now youre blinding everyone on the damn road. what do you think its there for looks? no it stops light from going where it shouldnt. can you tell im annoyed yet? this is the kind of thing causing the NHTSA to crack down on HIDs and well theyre damn right.
i think i see what you mean as far as the same or greater amount of light coming from a smaller more concentrated area but the amount of light hitting your eyes SHOULD actually be less. you can see this when you aim the lights at a wall.
everyone unwilling to spend the money for real hids and trying to imitate it by retrofitting hids into stock lights are a menace to other drivers. HID light is much worse as far as causing glare because night adapted vision is more sensitive to BLUE. this is why europe REQUIRES auto levelling and lens cleaning systems on all HID lamps.

Rockshox,
I see that you were annoyed..
Well, I was slightly concerned regarding to blinding other drivers on the road and also getting pulled over by police for having high beams or something.. I don't need that at my age..
Anyhow, I do understand that HID's are a lot brighter.. and the reason i took the shield out and maybe it was my bad judgement to do so.. But my reasoning was to disperse the light as much as possible.. As projector beams I see on BMW and other Euro cars vs. Acura which seems to not use projectors, seem less bright.. and less glare.. I could be wrong.. and I'm sure lack of my education in field of Physics made me make a bad choice.. but little I know, I know ( or think I know) that when you disperse the light to greater area, it becomes less bright.. As you focus all the light into one point, it looks brighter.. So, that is the reason, why I didn't go with BMW type projector lighting and also removed the shield.. And when I tested the HIDs to few 7 owners in town by following behind and passing, no complaints about glare..
Far as giving more light.. yes, its brighter than stock.. it does have slightly bluish color.. but it does help in that I could see farther distance.. I recently compared my head lights to S2000 HID's.. and mine gave farther field of vision.. but head on, they didn't have that small central point in the head light that was super bright.. which I feel cause glaring.. but like I said, its my opinion.. and I'm sure I'm wrong about this.. I'm in no way expert in HID's.. just wanted to give it a shot..

I use Silvania sealed beam HID's. They come with 2 ballasts and I think are in the 5000k range, pure white, not the blue or purple. They ran around 500.00 dollers.

HID Projector lights will give the sharpest cutoff possible.
Anyone with a HID kit, compare your beam pattern with this of an FD retrofitted with projectors:
I'm not trying to sound condescending, but just sticking an aftermarket HID kit in an RX7 is going to create glare.

I understand that it does give the sharp cut off.. I drove around in the S2000 and talked with the owner of S2000 and his comment about his HID was that the cut off was too sharp.. I think this one has greater cut off than S2000 HID's.. the problem is that it reduces visability during going up a hill and down a hill.. that was his concern.. and he acturally showed me what the problem was.. When he was going down a hill his field of vision was very limited due to the cut off.. He drastically reduced his speed because he couldn't quite see it all.. Try it.. I did some research before doing my conversion..
Ultimately, we all have opinions about the damn HID's.. I bought them because I wanted the most visabilities.. some argue it causes too much glare, etc.. well, OEM Mercedes also cause glare too... I don't drive my car as a daily.. I guess that's the best way to stop blinding people..

Ok Roxshox, your point is taken...
So where would i get the projector lights you are talking about? I know hella makes an oval hid kit, but i think those are auxilliary lights and woulndt work well for a headlight kit. I would like to make a dual circular kit that uses acual projectors if you have some suggestions.....
i like making/fabbing stuff, keeps me entertained.

There is irony when one is concerned with blinding people while they are driving without emissions devices and birds are dropping out of the sky as they open another hole in the Ozone.

Hella High AND Low HIDs
OK, the "Sleek Light Infidel" comes to the thread. Hella low and high beam HID's projectors imported from Demon Tweeks. Extensive modifications to Chuck's setup to make the longer projectors fit...

Excellent intensity, cut-off and focus.
DOT ... shmee OT!
Oh, yeah, and you're absoulutely right "I am", there are no oxyegn breathing lifeforms for atleast a 2 mile radius epicentered on my "sewer pipe" exhaust. ;-)

these are excellent http://catalog.com/susq/hella/90mm.htm and come in halogen and HID. hella also has a nice bi-xenon module that you can get from the same place even though its not listed on the site. i am planning on adapting my fd kit to the fc sometime in the future but that is months away.

I just got some HID's put in today.
McCulloch 6000k single beam.
The beam pattern's kinda funky, but overall, it's a pretty good kit. Nice and bright. It doesn't look like it would blind other drivers though.
Install was alright. Went pretty well until we tried retracting the headlights. It got jammed up against the ballast, so we had to remove it and reroute it all. After finding a good place for the ballast, they were good to go.
I'll try and post pics up later on after my exams.

Wow that is clean.
This is my 4700K setup in stock housings, and the cut off is not like that, but is not THAT bad. The housings I agree are crap, but if properly adjusted the increase in light output/safety is immense. There is no glare to oncoming drivers, as I adjusted and adjusted and checked them against my 3 other cars head on, etc etc. (I left the little caps on), and ouput is easily 2-3x that of halogen lights.
But where can I get a setup like the pic you posted?? Thats an awesome pattern.

With the help of a friend, we custom mounted HID projectors into the FD housing.
We use actual components used in HID equipped vehicles.
Custom projector retrofitting is a side business of mine.
