stock stereo issues and loose shifter boot on 85 GS

Ok, I've had my 85 GS for a week and I have finally gotten my arms and feet retrained on a manual transmission. I think I can relax a bit now and have some music on while driving.

The car has the stock radio, tape deck, and equalizer. When I first turn it on it makes a godawful popping noise and the antenna doesn't raise up. I assume the two are related, how do I diagnose and repair this?

The tape deck works with my Sony tape adapter when plugged into my MP3 player. I am only getting sound of of the right side speakers and the rear one is a lot better than the front one. Where should I start looking for problems??

Are audio connectors ever run through the center tunnel? My shifter boot is loose and I see a T shaped connector with 4 tabs on it and a black wire with a single round bare connector on it.

I'm guessing I pretty much need to pull and test everything but if theres a good place to start looking I'd like to hear about it.

Also, my shifter boot has been loose since I got the car. Its just not anchored at the bottom. The boot is in good shape and not torn and all the holes are round. How do I reattach it?

Thanks in advance.

Anyone? I know I'm not pimping a bumping system in a bling bling car, but I need my tunes!

The shift boot is an easy fix. Remove the plastec panel it lives it and relocate the holes over the metal studs you'll see on the underside of the trans surround. A very quick job. Have fun with the new car.
