I got a 88 vert, im running 2 x 8" kicker subs, that are customs and sit under the roof where the spare tire is located, i found that they work really well as the cabin is small, i got a 800w 4ch amp, also running my alpine splits with a kenwood deck,
here is a good site

You can keep the headrest speakers, but you need to keep the headrest amp, too.
The headrest speakers run off the secondary plug (AE/Rear) on the factory head unit. If you buy a wiring harness adapter (the scoshe one worked perfectly), then just wire those to the rear output of your new hu. I didn't do any voltage balancing and they work fine. The behind seat speakers also tap the rear output harness.
The other key is to hook your remote wire (on the new HU), up to a wire on the main factory stereo harness (the one with power and fronts), to switch the headrest and behind speaker amps on. On the schoshe harness this wire was not pinned, so you'll have to tap it and jumper it yourself.
I'll go search and reference to the post I made listing the color, I think it was brown/red on the main harness.
