Steering wheel hub to eliminate airbag light

Yes, I've searched and most of the threads about steering wheels are pretty old. I couldn't find a MS hub in Corksport website and the old Finishline Performance MX-5 hub links do not work and I can not find it in their website.

I am buying a Momo steering wheel and I am looking for a hassle-free plug'n'play steering hub which will not make the airbag light come on and will not cancel the horn.

I will appreciate any links or name of vendors who has these hubs. Thanks.

Get a works bell hub, not the short one but the regular one. Comes with the resistor and all, a bit pricey though.

This is the hub I got:

http://finishlineperformance.com/sto...cat=272&page=1

Fits perfect, and has the resistor pack to plug into the airbag light.

Don't I feel silly now Old Finish Line links didn't work and I guess I went into interior/dash/console and other subfolders instead of interior only

Anyway, thanks a lot guys

Now that I have the links, it's decision time. Hmmmm

WB short (2.125" / 55mm)
WB tall (3" / 75mm)
MX5 (???)
WB short + NRG slim quick release (2.125 + 1.25 = 3.375" / 85mm)

Why did you recommend the tall hub instead of the short one? Which one will retain the stock wheel's distance?

My car is in storage at the moment, I guess I'll have to go check if I'd like the wheel closer or further away. Stock seems to be fine though, I just don't know how the bucket seats I'm planning to get will effect the distances and steering position comfort.

The tall one would be the closest. The short one is usually used with quick release, but then it brings the wheel much closer to you. Also if you use the short one I believe it will also make it harder for you to get in the car, since the it will increase the chances of the wheel rubbing your thigh.

I'm 5'4" and the short hub+quick release moves the wheel a bit too close to me

Well, I'm something like 5'11" or 6 so if short hub with QR is too close to you it'll definitely be too close to me.

Another thing someone complained about the short hub is when turning the steering wheel hands hitting the wiper and turnsignal levers.

I guess I'll choose between WB Tall and FL MX-5.

Does anyone know how tall is the Finish Line MX-5 hub so I can compare it to WB Tall hub?

With a short hub and no quick release it won't work. The nut on the shaft will be sticking past your wheel, as in the wheel won't sit deep enough. You would need a quick release.

I have the Finish Line MX5 hub that puts the wheel at stock distance without a quick release. That being said, I added an NRG Gen 2.5 quick release to make it easier to get in and out of the car (I'm 6'6"). I found that by bringing the wheel closer to me it brought the wheel off my knees and made it much more comfortable to drive and car easier to control in general. I highly recommend it.

But then again, I'm much taller than the average person, let alone FD driver, and everyone is built differently. Just my preference.

Also forgot to mention, if your fingers are stubby, the quick release + short hub I can't hit the signal and keep my hand on the wheel without having to over extend my fingers... When I switch cars, the turn signal seems very far

Thanks guys, I decided short hub + QR is not necessary for me so I'll choose between Finish Line MX-5 hub and Works Bell Tall hub.

They both work well, they both eliminate the airbag light, and can use horn with both so it all comes down to looks.

I don't care much for the accordion looks of WB but I'm also not a fan of rough surface or sandpaper look of the FL MX-5 (although I've seen some with smoother surface in steering/interior thread) so I think I'll go with Works Bell Tall hub.

I've also contacted NRG Innovations and this is their reply for hub + quick release distance/length:

"If you prefer to use our thin version quick release you would need to use a momo or sparco hub adapter. Our thin version quick relese is not compatible with our short hub adapter. Our short hub adapter for the FD and our quick release combo and a flat face steering wheel will retain your stock steering wheel position. A momo/sparco hub adapter plus our thin version quick release will also retain your factory steering position."

--------------------------

I measured the oem wheel depth to column cover and it's about 90-95mm so with Works Bell Tall hub and a flat face steering wheel (75 + 5 = 80mm) it'll be 10-15mm further if my rough estimates are correct.

NRG short hub + NRG Version 3.0 QR is very tempting but still trying to figure out their exact combined depth. Also need to read more about the horn and airbag light situation.

I've seen some install a button for the horn and for airbag I think there are resistors or some other electrical part for sale, gotta keep reading

Here is a little list to help anyone looking for a steering hub and/or quick release:

Works Bell short hub: 2.125 " / 55mm
Works Bell tall hub: 3" / 75mm
Works Bell Rapfix II quick release: 2.4" / 61mm
NRG short hub: 1.75"/ 44mm
NRG thin version quick release: 1.25" / 32mm
NRG Gen 2.0/2.5/3.0 QR: 3" / 75mm

Do not get the nrg short hub, when I purchased it, it did not have space for the airbag wires, thus you will have to modify (cut) the wires or remove the clockspring, no more auto cancel .

I guess your problem was similar to this:
http://roadstergarage.net/2011/02/nr...lease-install/

Thanks for the warning but that's my only QR option to keep similar to stock steering distance. Works Bell Rapfix is a little pricey and doesn't look good together with their accordion hub imo. So it's either a NRG QR system or just a WB tall hub for me.

I'm not good with electrical stuff but I guess I can cut the wires and extend them again in the future if I decide to use the stock wheel again.

I had some mechanical problems with my car and it is not driveable at the moment so I've postponed all cosmetic/semi-cosmetic mods. But when I change my steering wheel, I will buy a Works Bell hub. I do not want a quick release anymore because even with the thinnest/shortest combination the steering wheel sticks out further than it does with a regular hub.

Unless that's your goal.

Yes true, driving position is personal preference. Mine is not a track car and daily driving it with steering wheel so close feels awkward.

Have you made any progress on this?

I was going to move forward with the Finishline adapter plus the NRG 2.5 QR, but the Finishline part has been discontinued. Like you, I'm not excited about the Works Bell.

^^ No I haven't, unfortunately. My car is still not driveable but fingers crossed we are starting the build on Monday so there will be some progress. Having said that, steering wheel is on the bottom of my priority list and even when I get one it'll be a regular hub and a 350mm steering wheel, no QR I'm afraid. As good as a QR looks and as functional as it is, it still brings the steering wheel too close for my liking.

Please post pics and specs once you buy the parts so this thread has more info for ppl looking for a hub or QR.

honestly the distance it adds isnt bad at all im running nrg short hub and 2.5 and it doesnt feel too pushed forward. and i sit CLOSE to the wheel, actually feels perfect to me.. imagine your hand around the wheel, extend your finger tips and your finger tips reach the blinkers etc. (just for reference on distances)

Here is another hub/boss kit that looks identical to the one Finishline sold. The only catch is they want an extra $85 for the airbag resistor pack.

http://rev9autosport.com/na/interior...s-hub-kit.html

Bubbles has it right- basically extend your hand and place your finger tips at the turn signal stalk, somewhere between the base of your palm and your wrist will be the new wheel with a standard length hub and an NRG 2.5 QR, depending on hand size. (roughly 6")
