Spirit R stereo....
Hi Guys,
Just got a new Spirit R type A and want to keep as original as possible. The previous owner removed his boom box and fitted the original stereo when I bought it.I think it's the same stereo that's found in all late model FD's. There are 2 vertical black plastic strip/trim panels that run either side of the stereo unit that he lost, I'm looking to replace these if anyone has replaced their original stereo and doesn't mind parting with them for a reasonable price.

Here's what I mean....
It's the two plastic strips at the extreme left and right sides of the head unit, they're about a centimetre wide and run vertically up the sides...

Sorry!.....
Didn't mean to steal your thunder by using yer pics FDNewbie!.Snkydvl I have the head unit that also includes the mini-disc player, the face tabs are slightly different due to the curved rocker switches on both ends,so the tabs are not exactly the same as the ones in your picture, I don't think they'll look correct if indeed they would fit. Thanks for the heads up though.
No, when I got it it lit up green but that is an easy fix. Just take the faceplate off and change the "condoms" to the amber/orange or red ones. You can get them from Parts-Express for about a $1 for 10 of them. They refer to them as lamp covers I think. If I remember correctly there were six I changed on this unit.
Everyone ditches the idea because of the green backlight on many of the mazda newer radios but I solved it easy enough. Took me 10 minutes to do it. For about $125 total I have a stock looking headunit that works great in the car.
There is a post somewhere on here on how to wire the harness to get all of the controls and lighting to work with the 7.

Since Mazda Australia stopped importing the FD in '96, I doubt they'll even know what I'm talking about!, whatya reckon they'll cost if I get them from you?
If they're still available, I'd think they're dirt cheap, based on the pricing our local FD chick quoted us
(I'm just playin hehe)I've actually never seen that post before; would ya be so kind to provide me w/ a link?

This is the post that has the diagram I used. It worked perfect.

I've had this set-up for a while in my car and since I don't care if I have my ipod for my rides in my 7 the changer is a good alternative for me.
Yes, this is what another forum member posted, I have not done it though....maybe someone else will try. I also know you can replace the tape deck module but done know what other options Mazda has.
Check out the "auxmod" for Bose miatas. I'd be willing to bet it'll work just fine (it's a PCB you add to that headunit and it puts a jack on the front or back of the headunit so that you can use auxillary audio.)
