replacing all speakers in 87 TII

I want to confirm the sizes of the speakers in my 87 TII. I am pretty sure I have 6.5" in the rear strut towers and oversized 4" ones in the lower dash in front. Is this correct? Will regular 4" speakers fit up front? Thanks alot.

Thank you sir Also I am thinking of going with polk 6.5" in back and polk 4" components up front. I have a 500 watt 4-channel amp that I want to use to push them. Think that sounds good?

You will want to cross over the fronts with that much power.

I would probably high pass to the front speakers from between 200hz-400hz and up (depending on crossover slope- 24db or 18db shoot for around the 200hz, but 12 or 6db shoot for the 400hz and up).

In other owrds you do not want the front mid-range trying to play any music under 200hz or you will fry them very quickly. The crossover that comes with the polk seps will not do this for you. You will need either a active (before the amp) or passive (after the amp) crossover here.

Could you recommend a cheap(or cheapest) crossover that could do this? I wasn't planning on running the amp at 500 watts(or whatever the RMS is) anyways. Just want a nice loud system. I think I'm going to leave out subs or maybe an easily removeable one later on. I don't want to spend a fortune on a stereo system, so let me know of a good setup you would run. Right now I have the following:

50x4 Sony Xplode cd player
500watt 4-channel amp
500watt 2-channel amp
12" RF sub

OK, i have ALOT of stereo experience with FC cars. Please post what 500 watt amps you have. 500 watt amp means precisely dick, i need to know what the rms per channel is, or the bridged power and at what ohms.

I would not do the 4" in the dash unless you have to. I ripped those out and upgraded the ones in my doors instead. Added 5.25" MBquart musicomp separates and they sound awesome. The dash location is about as good for sound as a Toyota Paseo is for drag racing. I did 6.5" quarts in the back, so your plan for that size works great. Your amps should have crossovers built into them. If you could post some more info, maybe i can help you more, glad you are going to upgrade your speakers, it will make a big difference!

Both amps were bought used so I am not sure on the specifics. One is a Jensen 500 watt 2-channel bridgeable amp with a built-in x-over. The other is a Power Acoustik 560watt 4-channel amp with 2 built in x-overs and is 2 ohms. The watts are not in RMS just what they say on them. Don't know what oHmz the Jensen is.

Hmm, if you can get the model numbers off the amps, you might be able to find out what the specs are on them.

Have you already boughten the Polk speakers? If not, you might want to condsider the door mount like i was talking about.

Those amps will probably be fine for those speakers. The jensen should power your 12" RF sub just fine. With cross overs built in, just set them correctly and you should be fine.

First and foremost, listen to any speaker before you buy it. You would be amazed to hear how sound quality can vary between speakers. I always say, listen and pick what sounds good to YOU, not what sounds good to anyone else or a salesman. I would try 5.25" in doors, and 6.5" in back.

For me, the MBQuarts are bar none the best sounding. I have separates in front, coaxials in the rear. The musicomp crossovers are awesome, so highly reccomend those. Quarts are very expensive though, so you might want to try something else. Just go to a couple shops an listen to the SAME SONG on each speaker, then you can compare them well. Hope that helps

*tacks on an extra question, while you're handing out advice*

I've got a '90 GXL, and am wondering if a 6.5" fit in the doors (well, 6.25" actual speak, 6.5 w/ grill)?

How does this set up sound? Kenwood KDC-V6017 ("47W"x4 (17W rms)), Kenwood 40Wx4 (~22W rms), 2 4" Infinity Refs (off the head), 4 6.5" Infinity Refs if they fit running off the amp.

I believe that the 6.5" speakers will fit in doors. The only issue is depth on those speakers. I had to create wood surrounds to shrink the mounting hole to 5.25" for my front separates. The worst would probably be that you just create some kind of spacer for those 6.5" speakers so that they fit, not too big of a deal if you are comfortable with making stuff like that. You wont be using the grilles that come with the speakers, just the speaker itself goes into the door behind the weird looking "triangular" grille in the door.

With your speakers, its my experience that running off the CD player power is just an OK way to do things. It should work just fine, but just be careful to listen for distortion when you turn up your music, distortion kills speakers. I may not be correctly understanding, but are you running your CD player power plus an external amp? When i first installed my system in my car, i had the front speakers running off of an external amp, and the rear speakers running off of the CD player. The front speakers played so much better at loud volumes, that i couldnt hear the rear speakers distorting with the 15watts rms off the CD player. Blew those speakers fast, but front ones were as happy as ever.

I guess to sum it up, your CD player works fine for powering those speakers and moderate volumes. If you want to make it play louder without distorting, then an external amp will be the way to go. The 6.5" should fit in front, and 6.5" fits fine in back of my 89 turbo. If you need any more help, just post and ill check.

Phew. That's good to know. Do you happen to have the mounting depth? Off the top of my head, I recall these guys are ~2.5" deep or so...

Yep, you got it. CD head for the little ones ones, and external for the big ones. Mainly, I'm interested in the 4"s just for some extra highs and mids, don't expect to hear 'em much. Thanks for the info!

I had an idea a while ago to run separate tweeters using the cd player and replacing the stock speakers and pushing them with an amp. Just seems like a way to use the power from the cd player. Would it work or would I need crossovers for it or what? Thanks.

You would need a passive crossover, to drive tweeters with the stock deck.

Most stereo shops should have the capacitors and inductors to make a simple 12 DB crossover, or some might have basic pre-made ones.
