Question Refinishing interior panels on FD3S

I have a '93, with Black interior. Because of the temperatures that my car had to endur while it was in Texas... before I rescued it to a cooler New England, the interior surfaces were severely affected. A lot of the original rubber surface that you find on the '93 models is peeling (melting) off and it looks like sh--. I was wondering if anyone had refinished their panels before, and had any advice about how to CAREFULLY remove the rubber coating... prime, and paint (a matte black) the surface so that it will look great and wear well.

I appreciate the advice!

Steve
