I'm going to take a guess here, but I'd bet that Recaro seats are price controled. Many companys do this to protect their brand image (Recaro=nice seat, high end price). If dealers started selling them at lower prices, then they would look cheap. Recaro would then stop selling to them. Again, this is just a guess, but I know lots of companies do this. Your best bet would be to wait for someone to go out of business, buy a discontinued model, or just buy one locally to save on shipping. The minimum price set by the manufacturer is usually keystoned in other industries(2x markup) so that amount of profit is good enough for the dealer to not jack it up further. That way they stay competitive with other dealers. That is why you can't find them cheaper anywhere, and they are all about the same price.

Volkswagen Golf GTI, Jetta GLI, and Golf R32 come with Recaros from the factory... might check out the price on some used VW seats.

I've seen people fit SPG's into FD's. Not the best fit, but hey, what does? Thats what i plan on putting in soon. I think DIYman25 has those in his car.
