rear window moulding gap

Question rear window moulding gap

previous owner filled the gap between the rear window moulding with silicone. just wondering why theres a gap there and if i should remove the silicone?

thanks, does it actually serve a purpose for water draining or whatever, or can i leave the silicone there?

It kind of holds the rubber it place in case it shrinks. It also hides the rubber ends
