RE Steering Column Gauge Pod
Does anyone have this on their car? I know you have to modify the holes on the sides to accomodate a LHD car's stalks I just wanted to know specifically how it needed to be modified.

you need to enlarge the hole for the turn signal stalk. that's all. the holes don't line up right. other than that it fits well. the real thing is expensive though. not sure how the copy fits.

You do? I just put mine from Pettit in last week... all holes plenty big. Just no way for the tabs to clip the upper and lower together. Am I talking about a different thing here?
BTW, LOVE the way it looks. Never cared for A-pillar mounts... screams race me to the ricers. And I don't race, 'cause I don't HAVE to

I have the Pettit pod also, and it fits, and looks great. I believe they make the pods themselves. As spurvo mentioned, you have to put a dab of RTV on the tabs to hold it in, since they don't clip into the new piece.

Anybody have the Pettit pod with chrome trim? Gauge is 52mm, right?....or is it smaller? Couldn't tell from the pictures on the website. I was looking at going with the new Defi gauges to link things together, but I really wanted to get a boost gauge in without spending that much money. I'd rather drop money in $200+ amounts on hp gaining hardware.

Yeah, mine has the chrome trim. Looks damn close to stock, people ask me if it stock. Chrome trim mostly matches the bevel of the stock gauges, and it lights up red that is VERY clost to the stock gauge backlightling. Me likes...

Hey Spurvo.
Where are you located in Seattle? I'd like to take a look at your boost gauge setup. I just got a '94 R2 and I was thinking of getting a boost gauge also.
I just can't decide between the column mount or the center speaker mount. Definitely not the A-pillar though.

Just a quick update in case anyone was interested, the pod fits perfectly. No problems, everything works great. You just have to "remove" the little support inside the pod. Needle-noses worked great.

The Pettit pod is custom made in fiberglass by Pettit without the clips. The RE pod costs a lot more and is made from plastic with the clips. I have the RE pod, and I had to cut the pod to make room for the stalks. It seems like they tried to cut it for clearance but didn't do it right. I used a drill to make holes for the corners and then used a Dremel cutting wheel to cut to/from the holes I drilled. It was easy and looks like it was made that way.

I bought the RE steering column pod and it fits perfectly. Sure, the holes on the side don't line up, but it's only cosmetic; I didn't have to enlarge them or anything.

I spoke with a guy at KDRotary a few months ago about some guage pods they were supposed to be producing; anyone know if they are out yet? There were supposed to be both a column mount with the clips on it already, for a drop in type of fit, and the "rabbit ears" style guage pods. I wouldn't mind checking the column mount out especially.

I have the pettit that came with an Autometer but I replaced it with a defi...
Well, the actual stalks on the car didn't have to be modded...I removed the top of the column and when I placed it on there it sat kinda lopsided...I laid the whole thing flat on a piece of sandpaper and moved it back and forth until the lopsidedness went away...then I had to take a dremel to the inside of the aftermarket column and cut the grooves deeper to accomodate the bottom columns peg thingies...then I dabbed some silicone on the pegs set it straigt with some rubberbands, let it dry and then Tadaaaa!
Here's some photos

I bought the RE version, and I never cut anything. Some cutting would help, but it doesn't bind that much. Although the place I bought it from said they came pre-cut for the left hand drives. Apparently they did cut them, but not well enough, because when I turn my blicker on to the right it catches a little still. Here's a pic or two.

apneablue, I have two other questions for you. Having the 3-gauge pod, do you ever have any problems with hitting your head or hands on them when getting in or out of the car? I'm only 5'8" so I don't think it's going to be a problem for me but I've heard of some guys complaining about that.
Second question, obviously you have the Defi Link gauges. How long have you had them? I was thinking of getting them but the fact that ONE WIRE caries the positive, negative and sensor signal worries me. It would seem logical that you are taking a risk of having problems. Thanks dude.

For you guys with the Pettit and RE column pods installed, does the angle of the gauge bother you at all? It appears to point up quite a bit. I'm curious because I'm just starting to make a few column pods again that will point more towards you, rather than up, so a little feedback on this would help. Thanks.

Hi Frank. I have the RE steering column pod and I have never even thought about the angle. So, to me, that would mean it is fine. However, I don't have the car here as it is in the shop right now so I can't just go out and look at it. I don't know if that helps at all.

Another thing I'm curious about, the stock tach does not really center on the column, it's off just a little. Subsequently, if the column pod has the gauge centered it covers up more of the redline area than the idle area of the tach. Anybody notice this or are the aformentioned (sp?) pods offset to the left some?
Regards,
Frank
(helps a little, Tom. Thanks)

when I was checking out the different ones when I was shopping for mine, I believe they were all centered. If you look at the picture earlier in this thread, I think you can see that once you start getting to that blind spot, you are hitting 8K rpm. I don't know what other guys are doing, but having broken an apex seal not long ago, I'm not running past that point. If I were you, I would probably level out the gauge some so it's not pointed so far upward and then sell it for significantly less than the competitors. Those two factors ought to differentiate your product enough to get some sales. If you offset it to the left, it will look funny and un-balanced. Well, that's my $.02.
