r-magic hid head light kit for fd?
#26
hey guys,
that's my car there... I heard from jt that some of you have questions.
First thing is first, I have had experience with 2 different lights (cwest, rmagic) and rmagic is the best lighting yet (duh, it's HID compared with measly fog lamps). As many of you may know, the cwest lighting is ****. They need constant adjusting and they have worse light output than the stock.
As for the kit, this is what I found:
-fitment is poor. It requires a lot of tweeking with your hood position, fenders and front bumper to make it fit "somewhat" ok. It took me 4 hours to make them fit right.
The design and construction of the kit is fair. In particular I'm talking about ease of access to adjusting the lights, install of the kit, and repair if necessary. The kit was designed for esthetics and not practicallity. They have it designed such that if I needed to do anything to the lights, I would have to take the whole cover off to do so. This cover is a 2-piece cover fastened together by two bolts from underneath. This wouldn't be such a big deal. But because they made the light fit into the sockets too well, that you'll end up messing up your light alignment when you're putting them in or you'll scratch the paint on the cover, your fender, or etc... The aluminium brackets where the lights and casing are mounted on were very well crafted. Welding work on them was excellent as seen by the beading on the welds. It didn't require any cutting of the surrounding supports as it was a direct bolt on. Finding a place to put the HID unit, however, was another story. I had hidden/mounted them underneath the aluminum bracket with support brackets provided by screwing into the body so this was the only "damage" I did to the car.
Light alignment is a bitch. As i said earlier, you have to put the cover on first before you try aligning the lights. Now imagine you trying to align lights that are tightened to prevent them beam "wandering" over time. (wandering=beam slowly point downwards after a few months of use & NO... locktight didn't help... it was so hot that it'd melt the sucker.) So alignment took some time...Otherwise, the beam dispersion isn't bad at all. Just take care not to aim them upwards. Besides, our cars are so low, you have to purposely point them upwards to blind the person in front of you. I had taken some night pictures but they really don't do it justice. You really have to seem them yourself.
Heat is an issue. when it's raining I can see the steam coming from the lights but it isn 't as bad as the Cwest where it fogs up the clear piece making it so that you can't see at all. Nonetheless, the clear piece will still crack. The good part about this is that these clear covers are easy to fabricate so you don't have to buy $400 dollar cover replacements like the Cwest kit. Also, after some time, dirt gathers inside the covered area (between the clear peice and the lights) so you'll have to clean it often. I do not recommend sealing the clear peice as the rain actually helps keep the HID's somewhat cool.
Overall, I like this kit. Though it may be a pain in the butt, the way the car looks after it's installed is amazing. It's like a complete face lift...
Sorry about the long post... but if there are any questions, please feel free to pm me.

macross11, thanks for the write-up. It's much appreciated. So THIS is your screen name on the RX7Club...
BTW guys, I can vouch for him...the lights are bright as hell. They really light up the road. The difference was HUGE to the point that when we were driving together, while he was twisting and turning all over the road avoiding potholes, I only found out about the potholes AFTER I fell into 'em...NOT fun LOL (remember that? haha...good times man).
Also, although you can see it for yourself, the lights look INCREDIBLE. Just WOW.

there are also other kits availible other than the rmagic. the rotaryextreme kit is also another one that you can get with HID and not have to cut into the body. OR... you can get the HID replacements for the stock pop up lights. I've seen them during the day and they're quite nice...
the high beams are really crappy but when you need to look at stuff far away, they do come in handy...
I deleted those night pics. I could take more but my motor's blown and she's in the shop so it'll be a while before I can get some new pics...
FDnewbie is right, you have to remove a lot of stuff, so it's not a simple swap so it'll take some time. Also, if you are going aftermarket (rmagic or cwest), get some connectors and a crimp tool so you can attach the wires to your stock harness. Don't use the wires/relay and etc that they give you cuz it'll just make a mess in your engine bay. even with the HID's your stock relay can handle the extra juice...

with the rotary extreme kit you have to cut alot of the stock supports where the light sits. with this you said you dont have to cut? or do you. maybe i read wrong? i have looked at both the rotaryextreme kit and this. and i like this much better. it's a much sexier looking headlight and if it functions as good as it looks than i don't mind the hassle with the install..nothing on the rx-7 comes either cheap or easy..so if lighting is good than i will get these.

yeah, this kit is a direct bolt on. ABSOLUTELY NO CUTTING...I know the RE amemiya kit requires cutting...but thought the Rotary Extreme kit didn't. Maybe I am wrong...
light output is better than stock and CWEST. don't know how light output is compared with the Rotary Extreme HID kit so you'll have to do research yourself.

and the kit in infact a true hid kit right. and yes the rotary extreme kit requires cutting. it's based on the re amemiya kit..
you think the lighting is better or same as this (just trying to get a better picture of what the lighting will look like) even though i will be getting these..
