QuietCoat Sound Dampening
My FD seems louder every time I read this thread!
David, I know it's early, but have you noticed any bad/objectionable effects? For example, does the stuff smell bad after curing, or did the flesh fall off your fingers after painting the stuff on?

I'd answer, but I no longer have feeling in my fingers and I've grown a twin out of my head!
Okay, on the serious side, no, there have been no objectionable effects to date. The material doesn't smell bad when applying. It has a slight chemical smell, but it's hardly noticable. Doesn't even give you a buzz when using - bummer. So, so far, it's a very good product.
I'm off this morning to take the car to Auto Preservation to have the underbody sound proofing completed. I anticipate getting the car back tomorrow so I'll let you know how it goes.

Yes, I'm doing the wheel wells. I've already done the "lip" on the inside of the hatch in phase one. I probably won't do the headliner unless I don't get the results I'm after.
The car is currently in the shop for coating of:
- underbody
- wheel wells
- transmission case
- oil pan

Update:
The auto shop to which I took the car didn't do the job so I have to find a new place to have the undercoating done. I've contacted several shops and hope to take the car in soon but this won't happen until next week.
Will keep you posted!

UPDATE - I took my car to Pettit Racing to have it checked out. See my sig for mods - car should be bitchin but it's not. Many things installed wrong by the shop that performed the work in Jacskonville FL. Soo..Pettit now has the car and it's going to be a week or two before I get it back. Had to rent a car to get back to Jacksonville.
Trying not to be pissed!

Don't know just yet. It depends on the when the parts show up. My guess would be a week from Friday. Should be all good though. Pettit states they'll give me 320-330 reliable RWHP at 10 PSI and 400 reliable if I run race gas and race spark plugs. Sounds good to me!
just out of interest have you noticed a reduction in rattles etc?? i notice a lot or rattles coming from the rear of my car and just wondering if it would help with these, or have you not taken it out yet??
Don't know that I've eliminated any rattles with this. I'm pretty **** about rattles and have always tried to track them down. So, I don't think you should look to Quiet Coat to eliminate this problem. I did notice because it's more quiet, mit is easier to loacte the source of rattles.
As a quick update, should have my car back next week from Pettit. Cameron Worth, the owner, is IMO, the Southeastern rotary "god". He's well on his way to fixing my performance issues. Will be nice to be fast and quiet!

I'm sold on QuietCoat, but just as I was about to order I found something similar, Item# 9545T1:

The price is very tempting, does anyone have any experience with this?
Thanks, Bob

Vibration Damping Compound
Brush, spray, or trowel on this water-based elastomer to control vibration on metal surfaces such as air conditioning units, ducting, machinery housings, metal cabinets, piping, aircraft components, and auto components. Compound is fire retardant and chemically resistant to most acids, alkalies, and solvents. It air dries within 3 to 4 hours leaving a tough and flexible finish. Temperature range is -20° to +120° F. Color is beige.

Sounds a lot like Quiet Coat. Why not call the distributor and ask them to compare versus Quiet Coat? Or how about calling Quiet Coat and asking them? At $70, it's about 1/3 the cost so if it's the same stuff, quite a bargain.
Bob,
This (refering to the McMaster damping product) is an old rubber-based coating. I have seen some people write about using it because it is really cheap, but there are NO results anywhere that I can find, and certainly no loss factors. These have been around for years. Usually you have to put them on very thick to get much effect. Our product works by absorbing vehicle body vibration, which means engine and road noise can be reduced by up to 20dB, depending on vehicle and application. This is no cheap undercoating of rubber or elastomer. This is a high-tech highly engineered polymer which will exceed your expectations.
Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.
Thanks,
Daniel Gonzales

Quick update - my car should be back from Pettit Racing no later than two weeks from today. Unfortunately Pettit found multiple problems with the recent work (see sig for mods) I had done at a shop in Jax FL. So, my setup will change but I'll have a reliable car that makes very good RWHP.
What does this mean to the sound proofing project? I'm still committed to finishing the third phase of the job, the underbody of the car, but I'm going to have to take new base readings before the third phase. Using these numbers, I'll still be able to determine the overall effect of sound proofing the undercarriage of the car.
Will keep you posted!

Pettit has the car back up and running. Will pick it up mid next week and then move on to the final phase of the sound dampening project.
Question - how many of you are still interested in me posting the results of the undercoating phase?
