Questions about Heating & Cigarette Lighter in an '87

I have been trying to figure out how the duct system works in my car. When I turn on the defroster the air comes out in the vents above the stereo panel which is useless when I can't see through the windshield. The a/c doesn't work either. I went to the Library and checked out the Chilton Manuals they had but they have proven to be useless. One is for every model made in '97 and the other is pretty generic, which brings up another question, is the Haynes Manual for the '97 worth buying?

I have had the glove box out while installing speakers and noticed all kinds of wires and stuff going nowhere. I'm sure some of it belonged to the stock stereo which was replaced before I bought it and whatever was in it was removed. But there are plugs that look like they have places to plug into but I don't want to start randomly plugging things in that don't belong. Searching for a manual is how I stumbled upon this site.

When I got the car it looked like the previous owner was working on fixing the little things that had quit working so I have extra parts inclucing two cigarette lighter hookups. All there is behind the ashtray are 3 wires and I can't find anything on how they are supposed to be connected.

I want to try and do alot of this little stuff myself, however I know just enough to be dangerous. I'm tired of mechanics charging me an arm and a leg to fix the little things I know I am capable of doing with a little instruction. Any and all direction will be most appreciated.

look for a factory service manual (fsm) you can find them 4 free online. Dont look at ones which arent for your year of car. I usualy toss my a/c for weight savings, especially if they are broken...

Your car has a Logicon computer that goes bad. Blowing air only through the vents above the HVAC controls is exactly what mine did. Also, although the AC was functional on my car, it would blow only hot air until the Logicon was replaced. So, you won't know if your AC is really trashed until you replace the Logicon.

Check out Icemark's web site http://www.mazdamark.com/products.htm
for a rebuilt Logicon. I think he resolders every connection so you will likely end up with a more reliable part than new.

Although the Logicon itself is in the dash with the HVAC controls on it, the connector plug is right in the middle of the dash, way up in front under the windshield. It's a PITA to get to, but it's doable with the factory manual.
