Q: on Fiberglass speaker Boxes!!!

Hey,

I am wondering how hard it is to build the clear fiberglass boxes you always see in show cars and stuff. I think that it looks really good but how hard is it to do? Does anyone know of any sites that may explain how to do it and what things to look out for??

I guess just some good links to some speaker box building sites would be nice that maybe talk about building boxes out of fiberglass. Thanks ahead of time

I think you mean Plexiglass. You can build a normal wooden box and just get 3/4 inch plexi for one of the sides. If you go to any local stereo shop they should be able to help you with a design.

Fiberglass boxes are a PITA. my friend and I made 2 of them for his MKIV Supra that fit in the back hatch where the spare tire used to be. Laying in the FG is not too bad and we just covered the inside of the car with saran wrap and layed the FG in there, but the hard part was sealing to fiberglass to the top of the enclosure which was wood. We had to make a fiberglass flange that was about 1in. wide that went all the way around the topof the enclosure so that we could screw the top to the fiberglass.

If you are talking about an inclosure that has a moulded top that is visible. Like AArotary's car for example you have to make a negative mold of what ever shape you want so that you can lay the FG inside of that and then when you pull it out it has the finish shape to it. They you will have to do a fair amount of filling and sanding to the final surface to get it smooth, and ready for paint.
