if you can still put in cds then the decks not broke, but if you cant see. it might me the power wire that lights up your headunit is burnt. if you got a warrenty take that **** back and do it right this time. if not you might be out a faceplate.. put it out and check every wire. you can see burnt wires also turn you car off when installing. then turn on when complete.
also after you test the headunit out of the dash you might want to disconnect the power on your battery. before install.

Which "+" touched which "-"? Were these power to unit, or speaker wires, or some combination thereof?
Typically there are two positive feeds going to the head unit, aside from the illumination. One is the main power that is a "constant" source, regardless of the ignition key posigion. The other + is usually only active in the ACC and ON postions.
Depending entirely how everything is wired, it's possible you shorted the ACC/ON-only wire, blowing it's fuse (or maybe even the wire itself), but still have an active constant source. Some CD players and head units will allow you insert and remove CDs while the key is in the OFF position (or if that particular wire is blown), but not allow you to power up the deck for playback.
