prep 4 paint

i got a set of fenders in the mail the other day. one had about 3 diffrent paints on it, and it was chiping all over the place the other one looks to have 2 diffrent paints and little bit of bondo but doesnt seem to be dented. i took the 3 paint fender and sanded it down to its orginal paint and on some parts just the bare metal. i used 100grit sand paper and a flat electric sander. should i sand all the way to the metal every where? and what grit next? can i continue to use the electic sander or should this be done by hand? thanks for the help im a newbie when it comes to body work

if you already sanded it down to metal than I would to the whole fender that way. You will then have to spray a sealer with some rust protection to keep it from rusting or it'll rust on you within a few months. Then spray a primer and then your paint. Make sure when you paint the actual paint that you want, you sanded the fender down at 600grit no more, no less. Some people will sand it at 800 or even higher but it is not a good idea. You need the paint to stick to something and not chip off

you never want to sand in circles on your finishing primer. Always with the body. Cause no matter what, you will always see sand marks after it has been painted. Only way to get rid of sand marks after you paint is by wetsanding and polish
