Powder coating the body?
Has anyone ever heard of this being done? I think that it might hold up to the weather a bit more than regular paint and clearcoat. I know they have a pretty good choice of colors and it might look pretty good.
I'm not planning on doing this to my own car but if it would work and I could afford it (probably not) I might consider it.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks to all that reply.

I too had a whacky idea about this. First you'd need to disassemble the whole thing (Doh!), then have it acid dipped (found a bunch of people who can perform it) then prep the body (fix any dents that you find along the way) and finally find somebody with a hanger that can support half a ton and a 20' X 16' X 12' oven to bake it in. That was the main problem, second was how hot it needs to get to for the power to soak into the metal the body could possilby bend/warp under it's own weight if not hung right. Other then that it'd work out great and the under body wouldn't chip from stones and what not hence no rust. You'd think there would be somebody who could do it cause a lot of classic car guys I know would be all for it. Check out HPIcoatings.com , I already contacted them to see if they could do it but they can only handle items under (apprx) 8' X 12' but they have a lot unique coatings.

I'm a CF and poop smith
you dont need a huge oven, just buy a IR hanger heater system such as that from eastwood so you can do large panels. Its fairly cheap if you check on the prices. Personnaly I'd rather do my entire car in CF

The BIG problem is you have to heat the METAL (Powder coat only works on METAL) to approx 450f to fuse the powder (it is a thermosetting plastic resin) Hot enough to melt all the insulation on the wiring harness not to mention all the other plastic parts of the body and interrior, Powder coat will NOT stick to any of the urethane body panels - (front & rear bumper covers, Wing, wheel spats etc.) and even if it would the CURING process would MELT them.

Hmmm... ok That makes sense, max. I think that the only way to get this done is to have a body minus the wiring and to find a paint that would match the powder exactly for the plastic parts(probably too much trouble).
I didn't mean to do the interior, just the frame and the metal parts, engine bay and such.

GUess what guys????
I am having my doors, fenders, hood and sunroof powder coated gloss black.
So far the doors came back and i have been more then impressed.
ONly the metal can be done.
The place that I had it done has done a 911TT race car.
The owner presented a stripped chassis with full roll cage and they applied the powder coat and rolled it right in the oven.
I'll post pics of the powder coated parts soon.
No more Rock chips worries. YAY!!!
