Painting TII hood myself need pointers

I recently acquired a black faded *** TII hood and I need to put it on a red car. I have the hood sanded and the dings bondo'd and leveled. Now the reason I'm doing this myself because the car's paint is faded as is and spending $150 to have it done proffesionally to not match the car is out of the question. Now hears my questions. I've heard that if you just take the clear coat down and leave some paint on the hood it makes a good primer. Would it be that much better to take it down to the metal and re primer it even though it match the car regardless? And also I'm probably going to go to sherwin williams and have them mix my cars' original color and put into a spray can of some sorts and just spray the bastard. I'm pretty good with a can so can I get some sort of clearcoat to spray on there also so it will have some sort of gloss to it?

I recommend not going down to bare metal. I believe you'll need an additional special primer if you do that.

I do recommend you take the hood off the car and hang it up by some rope to paint it.

And of course, wear a mask for sanding and painting.

Oh **** I need a mask while I'm sanding? I'm out there smoking a cig and sanding so imagine my lungs. Its off of course and there are spots were there is bare metal. I was just going to spray primer on anyways. Hopefully it won't look like **** considering I'm using a spray can but its not a krylon job its going to be matched paint put into a can and supervised by a pro.

I was just saying use one for sanding cause the dust goes everywhere. Of course if you're a smoker you're probably used to hacking crap up already.

If you mistakenly sand down to where some metals are showing, immediatly covered it up with Primer.. Use Etched Primer... If you dont cover the metal up, it'll rust and eventually when you shoot the base on top of it, it'll deformed or bubbles.

Just use 320 sand paper and sand it to the primer. And use Primer Sealer to Seal any possible deforms..
