painting the engine bay flame wars

When someone says they are repainting their car, inevitably the question comes up...are you going to paint the engine bay too? Ive noticed that a lot of people are really against the idea of painting the car without painting the engine bay the same color. I wanted to bring this topic up for discussion cuz i say who gives a flying **** what color the engine bay is? Unless its a show car, nobody is going to see it except you. Flame away.

IMO, if you are changing the color, you should repaint the engine bay.

However, if you have a VR car, and you repaint it to a different shade of red, I don't think I would bother with doing the engine bay.

Repainting the car to a completely different color and leaving the engine bay the old color is seriously ghetto, IMO. Not to mention it probably will devalue the car slightly.

yeah...i have been fighting with this for some time now. i just don't want to spend the money for a nice paint job and then when i pop the hood, it would always feel like an unfinished job my car is red...and i would like to change it's color, but i don't think any exterior color would look good with a red bay. i am thinking about going in there with some black spray paint and just do it black by hand. i think any exterior color would look fine with a black bay.

Suppose all FDs came stock with a red engine bay no matter what the exterior color was. Would it bother you enough to go in and paint the engine bay to match? They could have made it pink for all i care. I guess im ghetto.

If I were repainting the car and the engine bay was already a different color (whether stock or from previous owner), I would have the visible areas painted to match the body color. They can get most of the engine bay repainted without removing the engine (if that's a concern of yours).

I believe FD3BOOST had his engine bay painted with his car without removing the engine completely. You could probably search by his name to see his pics.

I say if your car is black...leave the engine bay black and paint the car any color...black doesnt stand out nearly as much as red or yellow would.

Actually, it does if you repaint the car a bright color. Someone on the forum has that setup, black engine bay and a different body color. It just looks strange.

Not sure what you would search under to find the picture though....

Having an FD means everyone that walks by will want to see what's "under the hood". You'll be saying after they see the mis-match and go

i wouldnt give a rat's *** if someone didnt like my engine bay. they can go get their own FD and paint the engine bay all day if they want. If you all think having a mismatched engine bay is so bad, what do you think of having a mismatched hood? cuz ive seen a lot of posted pictures on this forum like that and nobody seems to mind that.

You can have the ugliest bay ever with a fd, fact of the matter is, you have 254 horses to the wheels, they do not (under most circinstances).

Actually, I dislike that as well. I've had an aftermarket hood in my garage for almost 2 years. I could have stuck it on but I prefer to wait until I have it painted.

I was going to wait until I get the entire car repainted, however that seems like it's never going to happen.

I didn't have my engine bay repainted, I had the door jams and all of the hatch back opening. They missed doing the fuel filler door as I asked and will get that in 2 weeks.

I don't think the MBM engine bay looks bad. Like was said about Black, now if you had a bright Red, White, or Yellow, it might stand out more.

The Black and MBM are Dark colors, engine bay are dark, dirty and dingy so it doesn't matter. There isn't much you CAN see in the FD engine bay anyway.

I think it would look worse if I had the edges of the engine bay (sides by fenders and hood latch) painted but farther down it was still the stock color.

No way will I pay to have the engine pulled just to paint it. Now, if someday I have the engine pulled for something else, I'll see if they can spray it then.

How much more besides the Engine would they have to pull anyway? Brake master cylinder, ABS, etc..

I also agree that most of these are NOT show cars or collector cars. Think of how much money it would cost to pull the engine and paint it. That could be much better spent on other MODS!

If money is NO object, sure paint there too! If you are Jim Labreck pull every last BIT off the car and paint it, then paint it again!

People aren't Ghetto just because they can't justify painting something most people never see. Now, make sure the rear end is painted up really nice though, that's what MOST people will see!

Here is my philosophy, which doesn't mean much to you all probably...LOL

I have MBM, wanna go to IBM. I am gonna have the outside and jams/hinges done but not the motor. My next step in the car is to do the motor the following year, so when I have motor work done I will do the bay. And some have said they don't like it, but I believe a black bay would look good, there isn't anything to see in there anyhow but the motor and if that is polished up nice the black bay will set it off even more. To each there own though.

Ya know what the real issue is with all this? People being so critical to others right off the bat. If I do as planeed people will be like "WTF" when they see it, without even know the cars future plans. Only so much money comes in at once!

I look at it like this: the engine bay is just another part of the car. People have red seats, tan seats, black seats, carbon fiber hoods, custom graphic designs on the exterior, hell my friend just mentioned to me that he thought i should paint my headlight covers black (my car is red). Point is, with all that other stuff being a different color from the outside of the car, why should the engine bay color really matter, especially since its the least likely thing anyone else is going to see anyway.

Exactly. Similarly, I will never pay to have my engine bay painted a different color even if the engine is removed because i simply dont give a crap what color it is.

No I dont but i will describe it to you. Its nothing special to look at. This was a thread just for discussing this topic since i havent actually painted anything yet nor am i intending to. My engine bay is the stock vintage red color just as the rest of my car's exterior is. Aside from the strut bar and the pettit intake kit, it is all stock looking. It's also pretty dirty since I havent ever washed it. Oh, I also have some pastel light green grounding wires connected in a few different places.

Def. paint the enginebay, it looks horrible if you don't. I know because my friend bought a '91 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 that had a cheap paint job on the outside that was blue and the engine is still the original color of Burgundy.

OK, I am gonna try and not look like a dumb *** here, but FD3BOOST told me he got the paint job after he had hail damage fixed. My question, did he/you have the engined completely pulled, or is there somewhay to work around that and just get rid of the majority of the outliers?
