estimates???

whats up guys...just have a question....i have never gotten a car repainted so...i was wondering if anyone knew about how much it would cost...i know it depends on where you go, and how good of a paintjob you get. my car doesnt need any body work, and the paint is in pretty good shape right now...but i wanna repaint it and park it to keep the miles off...it only has 38k miles on it. any ideas guys?? i was figuring it will prolly be at least a grand...and help i would appreciate

I don't understand why you want to paint it if the existing paint is in good shape.

A good paint job worthy of an FD is $3000+. $1000 gets you a ****-class job from Maaco.

If the car has been decently cared for in it's life a 38K original paint job can look pretty sweet. I'd suggest spending some time polishing it up.

Otherwise $3K+. Quality materials will probably run $500 or more if it is clear coated.

You aren't getting it. Going with a cheap paint job will look WORSE than the paint you currently have. Unless you've got severe oxidation or acid rain damage, a good detailing will probably accomplish what you are looking for.

A $5-6k paint job isn't rediculous. The paint alone costs several hundred dollars. Then there are many, many hours involved at $60-80/hour for body work and paint.

$300-$500 per panel is typical in the Bay Area for paint and labour and I would guess is about the same in any major urban area. So $3-$5k is about ballpark for a complete respray.

A lot of that labour charge is removing and reinstalling the rubber and plastic trim pieces. A cheap paint place will probably just use masking tape and low quality paint. A sub $2k paint job would be possible if you were willing to compromise on quality, but it may start to look old within a few years.

The paint on a 94 is a notch up from the 93 model. If there is nothing drastically wrong with it, I'd take it to the best detail shop you can find. You'll be amazed.

$1300 to paint it? I wouldnt let him touch it for $1300, unless the guy is your best friend and he is doing you a favor?

have the car buffed, even if its 90% its better to keep the original paint if you can.

I guess if you are in the east or west coast is true what every one is saying you are going to pay a lot. However where I am I can get a custom high quality job done for $2,500. You might not know much about painting but I agree with you that 5-6K is ridiculous for a paint job. Hell that's probably more than the car is worth.

I don't see how its ridiculous, add up the time and materials required to do it properly and you'll see. You wouldn't work for free if you had marketable skills, right?

Well, let me see. I pay 2,000 for a car that its blue book value is 2,400. Am going to pay 5-6k to get painted. You are out of your mind. I don't care what your skills are. I couldn't see paying more $3,500 for a good paint job. And by the way I have been to 8 different body shops and that is the most I have been quoted, and for the 3.5k they are doing the car entirely i mean even pulling out the engine to paint the engine bay. So if you want to pay 5-6k for a paint job by all means do it. I know I am not.

good primer, base, clear, abrasives, fillers and other materials run close to $500 no matter where in the country you live.

You are buying labor, your not buying a item like a stereo

overhead costs add up as well, its cheaper to do business in some parts of the country then others.

I dont think for $3500 they are putting a primer on that will be sanded out, they are probably going with a wet on wet primer or they are spot priming, they are probably also going to remove as little as they can, they also might not be wet sanding and polishing the car after. Im going to also say your car doesnt require much bodywork.

Some shops will take on work to pay the bills without making much profit.

who cares about blue book value... theres plenty of 7's with $1000s upon $1000s of dollars invested in them. Do they get it back in value when they sell it ? NO.

LIsten, I know I am not going to get back what I put into my RX-7, I was not born yesterday. However, the shops that have quoted me this price are reputable body shops here in my community, and I have checked the work they have done on some of my friends cars and they have done excellent jobs with no complaints what so ever from their clients. I don't know I guess labor is cheaper in a small community. So you guys keep paying 5-6k for your paint jobs, I am not. When I get mine done I will make sure I post some pictures so you can see a quality job for less than 4k. You guys keep on RX7ing.

here is about 100+ pics of my car being completely painted! the color change from Mb to a custom pearl blue... we did about 4 base and i think it was 5 or 6 clear's... you can see the difference in the pics befroe and after the clear... i got that paint job hooked up but something like that he told me if i wasnt a relative would normally ost about 4.5-5....

and they used metal to fill holes and didnt just put a blob of bondo on there... i shaved off the antenna, spoiler holes, emblem holes, and other things...

all in all, this complete paint job from start to finish took about 3 and a half weeks... only 3 of those day's nothing was done to the car so a good 3 weeks...

this is what they did: sanded, welded, sanded, bondo'ed, sanded, primered, sanded complete car (wetsand i belive), base coated, clear coated, wet sanded for about 2 day's.. polished, waxed... then, about 3 months later, they polished it again and about september when the paint is a year old, they said they will polish it again free... the paint really shines! i havent even waxed it in 2 and a half months!

Thanks!

Well, in the Bay Area, a crappy starter house is over $400,000. Now how much more do you think a paint job costs here?
