I just went to take a look at my car that's been resprayed. We went with a honda blue that had some pearl in it that we thought would look good. But when I got there, the blue was WAY lighter than the paint chip was that he had shown me. I don't really know what to do, as the whole car has been sprayed and clear coated. Is there any way to darken a paint once it's been sprayed? What should I do here?

 

Well if the paint chip doesn't match the actual paint somethings wrong. Just tell the bodyshop thats not the paint you picked out and go from there.

 

I know, but I didn't want this to get ugly with the bodyshop. They did a beautiful job with the car, it's just that the color's not as dark as it was supposed to be. I was really dissapointed when I walked in having this picture in my head, and it wasn't even close. Be that as it may, I'm going back monday to have a second look at it out in the light. Here's a pic taken from my cell. Not a great example as the car literally glows from all the pearl in the paint.

 

only way to darken it is to scuff it and paint it again.

ask to see the paint in the can, or ask what color primer they used, maybe they did not use enough basecoat.

 

Good luck my friend, From the pic the car looks great! I understand its not what you thought it would be, but it does look they did a good job.

 

Yeah, I'm hoping that when I go back to see it and it's pulled out into the light, that I'll actually like it. Maybe if I don't go in with preconcieved notions, I might change my mind about it. Who knows, guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Agreed, basecoat wasn't dark enough.

Most of those metallics need a basecoat for the final appearance.
The paint chip should've mentioned what the basecoat color was.

Painting a metallic (or any semi-transluscent) color highly depends on what the basecoat is.

Shooting that blue over a black basecoat will turn it almost midnight blue.
Shooting that blue over a silver or what basecoat will turn it almost baby blue.
Any competent paint shop should know this.

I think the problem might've been me not really getting a good look at the paint chip shown to me. I went back and saw it in the light, and while it's still not exactly what I had wanted, it still looks pretty good. At night time I think that it'll be fantastic, so again, I'll just have to wait and see.

 

Maybe not as dark as you wanted, but looks damn good to me.

Thanks guys, it helps to hear someone else thinks it looks good. I know I know, as long as you're happy with it and all that, but I guess I like to show off every now and then.

Almost looks more like a 2 stage Ted. basecolor with the pearl in it as oppossed to a candy type paint. Then teh clear.

But the color of the primer definately makes a huge difference. Dark primer=Darker overall paint.

I've seen guys who repaint a CYM and go with a gray primer, and it just doesn't look right, you use a white primer though, and BAM! Its good to go.

But take a look at it with no preconcieved notions of what to expect. IF you decide you like it then great, pimp it. If not, well then tell them to fix it.

 

couldnt you just add another coat of clear with alittle black in it?, that will make it look darker, i have seen a couple cars who had it done, they look amasing. ads more depth to the paint,
want to do that to my car, im sick of just plain VR, want the paint to have some more zing

that probably wont work, when you wet sand and polish the car you might end up making it blotchy, it would only work if you sprayed,really evenly, the tinted clear, then cleared over it. At that point you might as well just spray a basecoat of your choosing and then clear it.

Adding black on top of red sounds like it would make it a dirty looking red.

 

I probably wouldn't tell them to fix it. Someone worked hard on it, and if you said it didn't match the color chip and wanted it resprayed, they'd probably get pissed off. Then do a half-assed rush job just to get it out the door.

 

The problem was that you looked at a small paint chip that is only 1.5" x .5" Every paint chip will look different when you paint the entire car. The paint chip will always look darker because it's so small. Even if they followed the correct amount of paint mixing and spraying. What they should have done is sprayed a let down panel, before spraying the entire car. I'm assuming that they did not since you never mentioned about it. The panel is a lot larger and would show difference in light and dark with the same color by spraying different amount of coats. The more coats you spray the darker the color will be. I'm surprised that they did not do this especially since you have pearl in the paint. Pearl can make a huge difference. If you not happy with the outcome get it repainted. Remember it's your car and you will be driving it not them. You are pay for something you want. It's not uncommon for a car to be repainted. This time tell them to spray a let down panel and for you to pick the color you want. It's not a big deal spaying the car again. Just tell them how you feel. Tell them they did a great job, but it's not the color you wanted or had in mind. That you wanted the paint to be darker and your not satisfied with the way it looks.

I think it looks very nice but then again blue and black are my favorite car colors. I would keep it unless you really dont like it. It might grow on you, just watch.....

Went by again and she's almost done. This was around 5pm and it was parked in a shadow. Even if I say so myself, the car's pretty photogenic. In the sun, it's lighter than I would've liked, but it's livable, so I think I'm not gonna make a fuss about it. Should be finished by monday or tuesday, just waiting on a belt molding from Ray Crowe. Almost there!

 

My mom came in when I was looking at that picture ^ and she said it was a pretty color. I think it looks great but I understand you had a preconceived notion of the paint and were a little dissapointed.
