Paint Advice

My 85 SE (black) has a good number of dings and the entire front end is peeling due to being too close to something on fire. At any rate, I want to remove all the current paint and go with that standard flat black project car look and I need to do it cheap. Has anyone seen this look and do you know how to do it? I'm not quite sure where to begin. I was thinking of getting a sander and going to town on the current paint, followed by some basic body work, and then somehow (maybe spray cans!?) painting a basic flat black coat back on. I just want the car to be one color and close to ding/dentless.

I'd like to know what is a good sander to get, preferrably electric and under $100. What type and #(grit?) of sand paper would be very helpful. And painting tips would be great. I just don't know where to begin but I know once that car hits the garage I want to get it goin.

Then I gotta/wanna rewire the thing. =)

Thanks guys.

I read that thread. I don't have any clear coat and my paint is entirely missing in some locations due to the heat damage. I think I will have to wait until I get closer to doing the work. I'm certain a lot of what will need to be done is remove plastics such as the bumper and front side moldings. Then I will probably have a better idea of where I stand with paint. If I still have factory primer then I will probably sand to about that point. Maybe following that with a macco coat of flat black.
