New Stereo Problems

I got my stereo installed last year in my FC and I havent liked it since I got it. I figured I would see what everyone thinks is the problem. I got 6.5 Cerwin Vegas in the shock towers, 4 inch Cerwin Vegas in the front with nothing the door panels. I got a decent pioneer CD player. My problem is the sound is very weak and tinny sounding, absolutely NO BASS! The bass just clips and distorts when you turn it up at all. I mean lots of my friends stereos that are stock OEM stereos sound tons better than my setup. I dont know what the problem is but it sucks putting a good amount of money into the stereo and having it sound like ****.

Get some subs!!!!!!!!!!!

No seriously you should at least have some bass with the 6.5's. Something doesn't seem right. What is the power output of the headunit? Are all the components brand new?

The smaller CV's generally don't have great bass as they are mid range speakers, but you should double check that the speaker polarity is correct.

You will need some one with better than average hearing to listen. Make sure the car is closed tight and the engine is off.

With moderate volume, fade to the front, then while faded to the front turn the balance **** all the way left, then all the way right. The loudest and deepest bass sound should be when set in the middle position. If it is louder, with deeper bass on either front speaker, then one speaker is wired out of polarity to the other.

Fade all the way to the rear and duplicate the test. Again if the sides are louder and deeper sounding than the middle position then one of the rear speakers is also out of phase, and needs its polarity corrected.

All of the components were brand new. The speakers were pretty expensive. I literally have NO BASS. It sounds like I have crappy tweaters and some really shitty mids. The power output is like 40X4. I'm not sure what the RMS is. Words cant describe how bad it would sound if i faded the speakers all the way to the front. The 6.5s distort really bad. A sub would not help the situation. I would just sound like crap with some bass then. I'm thinking maybe the acoustics of the car might be what is wrong. I havent a clue. I'm big on home stereo equipment but my car sounds like ****.

Again you need to check the polarity/phase of the speakers. If it is incorrect, you will have the symptoms that you are describing.

But also I would bet that the speakers are rated for more than 15 watts, probably about 50 watts. If you are expecting any bass out of a 4" speaker you will be disapointed. They should be cap'd off with a couple of 200MFD by-polar capacitors or some other sort of cross-over to protect them.

You may need more than that power to drive the speakers, a 40X4 deck usually only puts out about 12-15 watts RMS a channel VS a 40X4 Amp that ususally outs out 38 watts RMS a channel.

On your Radio; what size fuse do you have on it? A 10 watt fuse means that the deck can only put out a maximum of 18 watts a channel. A 15 watt fuse = about 25 watts maximum per channel. And thats with very efficent chip amps inside.
