I have been messing with car audio for a while and it all comes down to the money, how much do you have, and when we know that we can decide where it needs to be invested.
Does your car have a load exhaust? then you want treble and bass to play over the sound.
Is your car quiet? Then you want to focus on quality component speakers to bring the mid range to life.

I just finished my final rendition of my stereo tonite, btw its in a new audi a4, my rx-7 has no radio or interior for that matter!

I like eclipse alot, no frills headunits with amazing SQ....JL audio makes good speakers as well. To give you an idea of what stereo stuff costs I am going to list cost, and what my friend charged me for my final stereo.
retail my price
-Elcipse headunit 400 210
-JL audio component
6.5" front and rear 760 320
-Memphis 4 channel
interior amp 430 260
-alpine 1000w 980 free (he owed me!)
sub amp
-sub box 150 100
-custom kickpanels 450 230
-install kit 250 200
-old kicker amp 250 175
just threw away
-12" Diamond 175 89
audio sub
-Dynamatt 300 225
=4,145 =2,699
thats about it, and I love it, I can hear every frequency replicated equally.
but If I was in a loud car I would get nice speakers, and OK head unit, and a nice amp. That way you can hear over the noise
you could easily get a HU for 199, amp (this is most important for good clean music) I recommend memphis Mclass 300.4 (2 channels for the front speakers, bridge the rear for the sub) 350
Sub and box 150 and some jl speakers (or whatever sound good to you ears) 175

you could get by for 875 plus wires and be very happy
