I only smash my fingers on it a little lol. I'll get a pic of the current clearance to the shifter and post it.

They hit when it's open I'm assuming.

You are correct sir. Here is a pic of the clearance while open. I'm hoping new shifter bushings will save my fingers; otherwise, it's back to the drawing board.

What if you don't pull it out all the way?

RoughRex 01-30-06 06:48 PM

The weight of the drinks is supported by the bar running underneath. If I don't pull it out all the way the bar will rest on the plastic trim peice from the stereo installation kit (I modified the equalizer peice to fit the cupholder). I cut away most of the plastic on the sides so, I don't think it will support the load. It will just break.

Ah, gotcha. It was worth a shot ;).

i think i got the same thing

It would be harder to put in a CD, but doing that while driving is an unnecessary distraction, imo.

i can think of 2 reasons ...

first would be that if you had a drink in the holder it would block access to the cd player lol

second all the moisture from the drink would drip down and cause some water damage. I shouldnt have to say this but water and electronics dont usually mix well. :Kill1:

Sideways7 01-30-06 07:35 PM

And if you hit a bump and anything spills, it goes straight into the cd player. My moms Oddesy (sp?) was designed like this and the cd player was all gummed up.
Also, I don't think short shifter are really much shorter, they just move the pivot point up.

HOW DARE YOU BE SENSIBLE!

Anywho... good call on that. I forgot about the whole condensation factor... never good.

Actually, short shifters are quite a bit shorter of a throw. For example:

Your stock shifter has a throw of 6 inches(from gear to gear) where a Mazdatrix short shiftter has a throw of only 3.5 inches. A shifter is simply a lever and the pivot ball is the fulcrum. The higher pivot point on a short throw shifter is the whole reason it works. You have a longer shaft sticking off the bottom so you don't have to move the top of the lever as far to move the bottom shaft the same distance as a stock shifter.

To simplify: put a pen/pencil across your finger with a short end sticking off and see how far you have to rock the long end up and down to move the short end about an inch. Then move the move the pen/pencil so there is an equal length on each side of your finger and do the same thing.

LOL, welcome to Physical Science class.

I'm kind of glad Mazda decided to leave the cupholder out. I love the look on people's faces when I tell them they have to hold my drink.

Just a personal thing.

hahaha

I love the "attempted" cup holders in the glovebox. At least I think that's what they're for.. those two small rings on the glovebox door? Yeah.. I've had a couple drinks in there... when stopped of course...

After using my lap as a cupholder turned into about 3 different color stains on my drivers seat... and more than one,"OH GOD THAT'S COLD!" Coming from me during the creation of such lovely stain colors on said seat. I started only allowing bottled beverages with caps in my car ONLY>!

Haven't had a problem since!! :)

I just keep drinks out of my car altogether, cap or no.

It's not a hard enforced rule or anything I just never take drinks with me...
