Need Help- Easier way to peel Interior Dash?

Hey guys,
LIke many 1993 3rd gen FD's, the interior paint was not painted very properly. I've decided to just strip the Flat Black looking surface paint of the shifting panel to the Glossy Black plastic under the paint. PLEASE HELP ME..... Peeling it will take forever, is there any easier way to get that surface flat black paint off without damaging the glossy black plastic itself? It just takes forever to peel with my nails. HEEEELP!! THanks

This is what I did to mine.

I used a buffing wheel and polishing compound, and you end up with smooth shiney finnish.

Others have said to just use a plastic safe paint remover.

seabass, did you buff the dull black surface to a shine? I don't see how the dull finish would come off with buffing alone.

Easy Lift Off (ELO) available at discriminating hobby shops everywhere (well, most anywhere hehe). What I used to take my paint off, and worked like a charm w/o harming the plastic. Needed a couple applications, but paint rubbed right off. Got this tidbit from a guy that painted his dash using Tamiya Gunmetal paint, which I ended up doing.

the dull black layer that gets marked up is a coating ontop of black plastic.

I used a buffing wheel to remove it, just becareful not to used to much pressure or you'll "burn" the plastic.

I was afraid to used a paint remover.

What ever you use just test a small spot first.

Just get some ELO. Generously apply it on the interior part at night and let it sit until the morning. In the morning, just clean the part with some warm soapy water and the paint will just peel right off.

Has anyone ever just tried to prime over what is there already?
I suppose that if the factory paint starts to peel it would take off anything on top as well huh?? I'm just thinking that if you had an extra layer on there it wouldn't peel so easily. But I don't know I'm just speculating..

I've had no experience with this. I'm lucky my panels are all still perfect. I keep my eye on these threads though in preperation for the inevitable peeling.

I had that same thought. My panels were all perfect, I just wanted to paint them, so I took them out. I took the center console piece, primered it, painted it, got it looking beautiful, but wait a minute, what's up with the paint!? What's it doing!? It all started peeling. Apparently that coating doesnt want anything on it, cause it all peeled up. Tried it on the radio surround piece too......same results. I had to peel every little tiny piece off, or it would cause some sort of problem.

thanks for the info. I'll make sure I don't paint them unless they are getting bad then.

Huh? I have no idea what you are talking about..

As for painting, you also need some sort of clear enamel or something similar to finish it.. Regular clear coat paint will get worn too fast and you'll have to repaint it within 2 months.

I used some Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic that has worked the best so far. The other enamels I tried needed to go on too thick, thin coats didn't work well.

it isn't paint guys, it is a thin rubber coating for gods sake. I took my center console out, sanded it with a sander to remove the coating and then painted it. I would like to do it with the rest of the console, but I heard it is a pain in the *** to remove.

Who cares what it is? Sorta like arguing exactly what shade of silver a given car is. Plastic safe ELO paint remover takes it off with little work.

There is no "I'm with him" sign without the "stupid" here. I used that as agreeing with him... If you read my message, I reiterated his comments and added to them.

Geez, get that burr out of your *ss...
