I warmed up the engine, let it sit for 30 min. or so for the exhaust/turbos to cool a bit (below ignition temp. for solvent). Then sprayed engine cleaner everywhere, and after a few min. for it to soak in, used a pressure washer to clean it off.

The engine compartment was also very dirty. The previous owners/Mazda dealer had left the shipping wax on it, and the wax had absorbed black "grunge" and hardened. I tried all kinds of solvents, including "varsol", paint thinner, xylene, light oil, alcohol (3 types), etc. Nothing touched it. Then I was Zainoing my car, and noticed Z1 took it off (with lots of rubbing)! Yea Zaino!

Here's a heads up. Simple Green should be carefully used on aluminum parts.

From their website:

"Aluminum - Is it safe to use Simple Green on aluminum?

Simple Green products have been successfully and safely used on aircraft, automotive, industrial and consumer aluminum items for over 20 years. However, caution and common sense must be used: Aluminum is a soft metal that easily corrodes with unprotected exposure to water. The aqueous-base and alkalinity of Simple Green or Crystal Simple Green can accelerate the corrosion process. Therefore, contact times of All Purpose Simple Green and Crystal Simple Green with unprotected or unpainted aluminum surfaces should be kept as brief as the job will allow - never for more than 10 minutes. Large cleaning jobs should be conducted in smaller-area stages to achieve lower contact time. Rinsing after cleaning should always be extremely thorough - paying special attention to flush out cracks and crevices to remove all Simple Green/Crystal Simple Green residues. Unfinished, uncoated or unpainted aluminum cleaned with Simple Green products should receive some sort of protectant after cleaning to prevent oxidation."

Castrol Superclean and a carwash is the only way to go if you want it clean the first time.

I cleaned mine yesterday using only a pressure washer.

Warmed the engine at working temp and let it sit until i took off the intakes, cover the tubes with nylon etc, then i power washed her and that's it. I let it dry for an hour and then switched on.
