mounting speakers in rear touring pockets?
anyone done this successfully?
i want a clean job done so it looks oem as possible. i was thinking about using 5.25 speakers so they would fit easily... not totally sure on anything yet.

My stereo shop advised against it.
4x6 is the size I was going to use, and they said it would not help the sound stage imaging that much. Plus, it would add more amps into the equation. I also didnt want to cut away any of the metal in that area.

BTW, a friend of mine has his speakers mounted in the pockets. It sounds okay, but I didn't crank it too much. I would think it would sound too boomy, like your rear speakers are in a cave. You might be able to stuff it with polyfill or something to help reduce that, but I can't imagine it would sound great.

I did it with some 5x7's, had to drimmel out the back and run some wires to my headunit, took a lot of time fitting the plastic to the hole perfectly. Now, i just need a cover of some sort while the car is resting.

love the sound as well. added great mids. By the way, I did this along with replacing my bose door speakers as well. so the amps were not a problem with sound leveling.

i haven't taken a good look yet but would it be possible to mount a 6.5 or a 5.25 where the touring pockets are and still keep the pockets as a cover...?

I know what you mean, it may be possible. I was thinking of doing this and maybe just drilling some holes in it to let more sound pass through then covering it with speaker grill material. But then you would need to cover the top open part, maybe by using some wire as a form for the cover.
