leather seat color damage

somehow gum miraculously ended up on the back of my shirt, and when i sat down it got all over my tan leather seats ('93). silly me, i tried to pick it off with my fingernail at first, and later resorted to buying leather cleaner and conditioner. needless to say, after i cleaned the seat i found that i'd actually scratched some of the coloring off the leather. now i've got these ugly grey spots.. my seats were in pristine, showroom condition thanks to a meticulous previous owner, so i'm really upset i messed them up my 5th day of owning the car.

any way i can touch up the color on the seat? there's no physical damage to the leather, just the color scratched.

1. Strip down the leather (I use mineral spirits)
2. Recoat with black leather dye (use the Kiwi glass bottle and a rag to
apply)
3. Repeat #2
4. Repeat #3
5. Apply shoe polish.
6. clean - rub off polish with clean cloth
7. clean
8. clean
9. clean
10. wear old clothes for the first couple of times driving.
Your seats will look as good as new. I have done this to my touring seats,
looks great!
Redying your leather seats to factory new...
First you need to go to your local Wal-mart or whatever is near you and get some liquid dye and shoe polish that matches your seats. For me it was black. Then you want to clean the leather with a leather cleaner to remove all the filth on it. You might want to try to put some leather lotion too. Then follow the instructions on the back and get a cloth and slowly start to spread the dye onto the seat, apply it evenly to the needed areas or to the whole piece being worked on. Then let it dry overnight. Then reapply again. After a few days get a clean cloth and gently remove the excess dye from the seat. Do this for two days and then apply the shoe polish to the seat. I just did this as an added step. Put the polish on just like you did with the dye, but only once. After that remove the excess dye and polish from the seat for two to three days. Once the cloth starts to accumulate small amounts of dye and polish apply the leather lotion to the seat wherever you see dry spots. After that you may want to keep a towel under you for a few days. There you go a factory new look for your leather seats with little cost to you.
