KaBOOOM!! Box for 3 10's in a 2nd GEN?!?

Hello Everyone!

I only have the stock speakers in my 7 (I just got it, give me a break) and they sound like ****.

What size speakers are in the doors? Are they 4x6's or 6" or what? I think that the struts are 6" is that right?

I already have a 1000Watt amp a pretty nice JVC head unit and 3 7000 Series MTX drivers. Has anyone else attempted (probably) this before. I am sort of new with Car Audio (only about a year now) and I'm trying to construct a box that will allow me some room and hit like HELL!

What I was thinkin' was facing them up in a triangle formation. They only problem with this is I won't have a trunk.

Sorry to ramble on for so long but can anyone help me out here?

Thanks!

Rick

Be very careful about how you wire up the car. It's pretty finiky. OK, 3 tens.... wow. The car's small so I don't see why you need so many subs but that's your perogative. Do you have a 2+2? if you don't, like in my case, you can take out the two cubby holes behind the seats. you can make your box to mold around the area left behind after taking out the two cubby holes to secure your 3 MTX's. As for the amp, i guess you can try to put it in an encloser of some kind on the side of the box facing forward. As for the speakers, you can fit up to 6.5 inches over the rear shock towers and the front speakers are 4.5 inches max i believe. It's either 4.5 or 4.25. Well, in any case, good luck!

Peace,
AJ ^_^

Hey Thanks Bro!

I have the 2 seater with the cubbies (89 TII). What the heck is underneeth those things? Haven't had any time to really get into taking the car apart. Is there any wasted space between those holes?

This is what I'd recommend. Strip down the cubby holes and the bracket that holds the cubby holes in place down to pretty much the frame. I'd then mount whatever box you build or what not onto that. It'll be that much easier when it comes to close the encloser and make it look whatever you want. Just my 2 cents!

Good luck!

AJ ^_^

It has been done. There is tonnes of air space for 3 tens in there. Just be a little creative.

The rear towers can hold 8inch speakers. That is what I have in mine, although I had to remove the grill because the tweeter section of the speakers was too high.

I also have 3 10" subs in the back of my second gen. I just have one big box which sits between the rear stut towers. I would suggest that if you were going to put in 3 subs to buy the JL Audio ones because they are 6ohms. This means that if you wire them all in parallel then you will present the amp with a 2ohm load. Just make sure that your amp can run 2ohm stable otherwise you will fry it.

2+2 doesnt matter

either way you have the space there simply unbolt the covers and make a box to fit if. you use the contours of the bottom like with fiberglass or something there no problem with gettin 3-4 cuft out of that area i have 2 sounstream 10s reference (long thro)series they hit like the thunder god himself (250 watts a side has something to do with it too but anyways, use that space and youll still have room for you trunk stuff i used it and raise my floor back there 4 inches and used the cargo covers as speaker grilles looks pretty damn nice if i say so my self

My forte' is car audio and I'm in Milpitas. If you want some guidance as to how it should be made or hooked up let me know. I had 3-10's in my associate's 87 sport, which he gave back to me in exchange for a 10 due to weight issues. Keep the weight in mind if you like the car's nimbleness.

Anyways, what is the required airspace for each of the subs? I'm in NYC until Monday, but you can come to my house in Milpitas whenever you want next week. This seems to be your best solution. I have done, I don't know how many systems. If you want a good box made for you, that can be done too. Oh, I sell JL and all that other good **** too. Sorry, no Goodguys MTX ****. I used to be one of the head installers at the Valley Fair location. At least you got the 7000's though. Are they 4 ohm or what? What amp do you have? I need to ensure the amp's stability.

Anyways, I have much experience with box designs but will only do them for locals, which is why I do not go into this section much. Mostly offer services in the Tire/wheel/suspension/brake section of the forum. Oh yeah, I don't work on stupid ****, cause I don't want them in my portfolio of cars that have been done. My **** is real, yet simple and extremely functional.

I wouldn't fire them up into the glass hatch because of possible crackage. I've done it with two twelves in my 93 GT Probe.

Good luck,

How do those 8's sound in the rear speaker locations? And what speakers did you use? I just test fit an Infinite Baffle JL in the pod and was amazed at the clearance. Did you make some baffles for the woofs?

Thanks, Rishie

The speakers that I put in the back were 8inch Pioneers. I can't remeber the model no. but they were the 2000 model of these ones http://www.car.pioneeraus.com.au/cat..._ts-e2095.html

Because there is very little air space in the rear speaker towers they don't put out very much bass which is ok seeing as that is what the subs are there for. They add extra mid and high freqencies. I know that having tweaters at the back is not good for imaging but I keep the amp turned down so that they don't overpower the sound coming from the front. They serve the purpose of added volume more than anything else.

My subs are all just in the one big box, with no baffles or anything. The sub box came with the car when I bought it becuase the guy had a similar setup.

I have no idea where you can get them over there. I guess if you quoted the part no. to a Pioneer dealer he would be able to tell you. I got mine at a JB Hi-Fi over here. I waited about 3 months until they got them in. As soon as I saw them I got them straight away because there don't seem to be many around.

Dude you can put a **** load of stuff in those cars!! We put 6 mtx blue thunder 12's in my buddies 89. He had 0 gauge wire 3 huge amps new alternator, isolater, regulator! He had a limited edition battery from street wires that was a 14.4 volt battery when the car was off and 16.6 when it was running. Anyways you can put 4" in the dash 6.5 in the doors and up to an 8 in the rear. I am not tottaly sure but i know that in my 91 the door spks have an amp behind the passenger side dash spk that goes to the door spks that makes them only play low freq! So what i did was disconect the dash and run the wire through the door jam and make the door spks full range. or at least run all new leads to them so you can amp your highs because you will need it with the 3 10's. Trust me the car is awesome for a system it will sound sweet

Where's the choice for "I'm an idiot because all I can hear from my stereo is bass"? Seriously, if you buy quality parts, you don't need three 10's in one of these cars. I've got a single 10 running off a 150 watt amp and it's already vibrated the choke **** and the rearview mirror loose. If I crank the volume and the bass up, change will jump out of my coin holder... I don't know how you could actually need anymore than that, aside from SPL competition...
