Interior Cleaner Question/Advice??
Interior Cleaner Question/Advice??
I own a 93 Touring and recently bought Blackfire Advanced
Technology Interior Cleaner. It says it cleans and freshens Fabric upholstery, carpets, vinyl, and leather. I tried it this past weekend and it cleaned the vinyl great; much better than Mequires Vinyl and Rubber Intensive Protetant. It did not mention plastic but of course I used it on the drivers side black plastic inserts in the door panel. Not a good idea. The plastic parts got tacky and it freaked me out. Tried to clean with a cloth but it scratched rather deeply. Took the entire door panel out and then the inserts and cleaned it off as best I could. My thought was it was dissolving the plastic.
I have heard that the 93's had inferior plastic parts and was wondering if maybe it was only taking off the top coating, although the scratches were deep from the cleaning attempt.
I am not sure what my options are except buy new parts if I cannot get a decent look again.
I screwed up by not testing on a small area. If you use this product on plastic be careful and test.
Any advice from the technical members of the club?

Sounds like the interior plastic peeling issue typical for the 93's. I had the same thing happen recently while removing some old window tint from my windows. Was using ammonia and water (which dissolves the window tint adhesive if you put a plastic bag over it for a period of time to allow it to work without evaporating). The soln I used dripped on to the door handle plastics. When I tried to wipe it off, mine got sticky too.
My solution was to continue to wet the plastic part with the ammonia/water solution. I was able to remove all of the panel coating. Underneath, I found a smooth surface that looked like a fiberglass gel coat. Almost as if I had painted the handle gloss black.
Here is a pic of the door panel after I cleaned off the tacky material.

iterior cleaner cheap
by accidnt was working on my shifter boot and wanted to wipe it down, used isopropal alchol and had the same effect now my center cosole is smooth and shiny, much better than the sticky residue.now just to find time to do the rest of the parts
Thanks for the advice and information. Maybe I didn't screw it up as bad as I thought. I will just have to take it all apart again and rub the coating off. It does look good with that coating off.
Technomentor, what proportion of ammonia to water did you use?
Mahjik I appreciate the links, quite helpful.

Just for future knowledge...I have found that a spray bottle filled with a dilute mild detergent/water solution (like dish soap kinda stuff), a scrub brush, and a dry towel do wonders on interiors. Spray lightly onto the piece, scrub lightly with the brush, and wipe clean with dry towel.
