An interesting audio project.
Hi people. I am a newb to this site, but hey i just got my 87 GXL not too long ago. Did a little audio project between the past two days and found out a wealth of interesting ( at least to me ) things. First of, the puzzle of a kit (20 $) you can buy to install head units in the car is a mess. Once you get it all sorted out it makes it easier, but changing the clarion Tape deck, EQ, and radio into a ISO DIN head unit is frustrating as all hell. Luckily I also got a little open bay type thing to fill up all the extra space. One that was installed and all hooked up ( don't forget the other 37 $ on connectors ) I realized that it didn't work. I didn't get anything out of the speakers. Bot buzz, no hum, no SSSSSSS.
Nothing.
Took the radio apart to check...ground was on the frame, everything else was there. And I notice the white wire. Not hooked into anything. Questionable. So i took out my 87 repair manual and supplement guide ( all orginal baby ). Wire diagram says white runs into amps. Hmm. Amps. Upon further inspection of each speaker bay in the rear, I saw the amps. They reieve the positive and negative signals for the speaker, as well as a 12 V DC, ground, and amp turn on wire. That would be the white wire. If anyone has looked at the back of these speakers you'll notice they read about 25 W peak. Amps = overkill and old - almost as old as me. Not to mention the head unit did not document which output was an amp turn-on. So then we get the next step. Bypassing all of the amps. Well the rear speakers were easy. Simple cuts and splicing and some electric tape and all set. In fact, I did them around 1 AM last night. Now the front speakers were something special. Firsoff, it was hard to take off the vent/speaker assembly in the passenger side. Note that means without breaking anything. Anyway..get that off, take apart the speaker box, and i see about 10 wires going into it. Oh great another spin. It seems as though to preserve space on the driver side, the front amps are coupled together. And part of the connector into the box contains the speaker-outs to the driver side. So took apart the driver side and took note of colors. Isolated them on the other side. Then a referred to my wiring diagram, and took the driver side fron signal wires, and jumped them into the speaker outs. So now we have three speakers done. One left. Also the hardest one. I cut the wires behind the connector. I stripped about 3/8 " on them. I then took some 16 or 14 stereo speaker wire and made about an 8 inch extension. I cut the wires connected to the speaker, and spliced them with the extention, then made a hole through the circuit board where the male connector goes, and ran my wires through there. Connected the speaker, closed the box back up, and hooked everything back up. With power on now, the stereo works perfect and all the speakers as well. One thing though. Antenna power is screwed up - I think I need to be an IC in there to invert the signal, BUt i am still working on it. Anyway thought it might be interesting for any enthusiasts or people who have had trouble.
Nothing.

Good thing my car didn't come with stock speaker amps. I dint buy that kit to install the deck or the harness. I used the braket brace thingy that came with the stock stereo, for wich i had to make new holes in it and mounted my alpinde deck flat kind of like stock. For the wireing I just taped the stock wires.
I still have the Power antena problem thow. Hopefully some one figured out how to fix it. Maybe with some relays or something. Ill serch and see what I can find.

Either 1) you got it used, 2) you lucked out on eBay, or 3) you have a hookup and paid the wholesale price, or 4) it was stolen.
Now which of the above is correct?
