Because I never hear how this system sounds can someone who have bose system give a feedback how it sounds?
I will use alpine head unit.

Unless you are getting it for free or next to nothing, I wouldn't do it. I'm not much of an aftermarket audio guy but the mazda bose systems is one of the lousiest "premium" sound systems I have seen. If you must that at least throw in an aftermarket quality head unit. The stock one just has no power.

FYI- The majority of people have a misconception of what a bose system really is. That is why they dub it “bose blows”…. Think about the original target group that the FD was meant to capture. Upper middle class men with disposable income. Given that, a properly functioning bose system delivers a very clear, crisp melody with very dictinct highs and lows. It is more geared towards appreciation of let’s say classical music than Jay-Z. Now many folks believe that the “snake” is a “boom box” which they are dead wrong. The snake delivers only bass, but that bass is designed to accentuate the music, not rattle the rear hatch.

IMO is not worth getting a bose system these days. The majority of systems out there are getting old and may be prone to failure. Besides you can always get a surround sound system that will yield you the same results (and more) with less headaches.

Another thing is that the bose head unit is passive therefore each speaker is active. What that means is that the headunit provides a very low power signal and that is why there is an amplifier integrated at every speaker. If you go ahead and slap an alpine headunit you will have to buy attenuators so you can bring down the signal going to each speaker. Otherwise you will overwhelm them. See what I mean about it not being worth it.

In my car I have an alpine head unit, two 3 way speakers, two surround sound, and the bose snake. It sounds good, but I want more “boom” than the “snake” provides.

very well said.

Bose has great sound quality, but lately I've been toying with the idea of dumping the tube in the rear and replacing it with a single 8" like I've got in my CRX.

8" sounds like a good idea, because i had a 10" and that was too much. maybe for what i was looking for anyway...

My car has the stock speakers (5, including the one on the dash) and I hooked up the cheapest name-brand headunit with MP3 support I could find 2 months ago (a kenwood)
I see no reason to improve the soundsystem. Sounds nice the way it is.
I mainly play classic rock in the car btw.

I only keep the bose system because of collector value. trying to keep the stock parts on in the hope of value later. I don't listen to it anyway only the engine while driving

Thank you for answers.
I have found bose system in ebay with left/right speaker module/wave tube system and seller said that is from 99 spec fd3s.
I dont believe that because I dodnt think that 99 spec fd3s have bose wave system but is in great condition as I can see from pictures.
The audio system who I have in my car now is pioneer head unit with 2 pioneer rear speakers and I can say that the sound is very poor and that because the fd didnt have enough space behind the speakers so not enough air for speaker to work well in low frequencies. If I install the same system in other car I am sure that it would sound great.
I know that the bose system use amplifiers for every speaker so I drive the wave tube and front speakers from preout head unit.
Also before install the system in my car I will search for after market speakers to replace the old speakers in the wave tube and also for front speakers module.I dont know if I can find alternative better speakers but I will try.

Well ok if you don't like to hear music when you drive your car for many kms then ok you don't need nothing more than stock head unit and stock speakers made with paper. Some times I turn off the music to hear the engine but not every time I prefer to hear music in good quality while I am in trip.

Instead of turning the signal down I just cut power to each amp on the speaker, its been working great so far.

Never tried that given that bose's speaker impedance is 1 ohm. But hey if it works it works!

I'm looking to do the same thing. I had a door speaker go out on me so I replaced the doors (already had a new head unit in with a Schoes (sp?) adapter) and put in an amp for the base. I'm using the stock Bose speakers and wave. I just want to get rid of all that plastic in the back so was thinking about a single 8". Just trying to figure out how to make a decent enclosure.
