I'm a primer virgin

I have a white s5...and for those of you that don't know, white s5's have TERRIBLE paint jobs. It's starting to peel off all along the drivers side and it's not my pretty baby anymore...

I've never primered a car before and wouldn't know where to start or what to do. I'm not about to pay someone to do it for me, so can someone here tell me the is on a proper primer job?

help a brotha out

We did the '55 Buick with a ROLLER and foam detail brushes from ACE hardware. Used oil-based Rustoleum thinned slightly with mineral spirits. Here's a pic in direct sunlight. Not perfect but it might as well have been from 5 feet away or farther.

Moparts.com has a "DIY Paintjob thread" that people from all sorts of other forums register to post in. Both rollering Primer and paint. Lots of good results.

My Duster and Dart Wagon I rattle canned. I always just scuffed 'em lightly with whatever sandpaper I happened to have a lot of, soaked the base of the cans in warm water while I did the masking and dusting, then shook well and primered.

It's not rocket science. If you mess up somehow, you can always re-primer that area.

Honestly I have just primered my FD and I would never use rollers or any type of rattle can/spray bomb! Go out and buy a gravity fed spray gun, you can get a semi decent one for prob around the $100-200 mark I would go the upper of the two at least, also go and rent or buy a compressor + a line. This will save you much time and anguish by doing it properly the first time. just get the guy at the shop (if helpfull) to walk you through how to use it and make sure you clean it out after every use. Another good thing to do is get a "test" panel from a panel repair shop anyhting will do, a bent door, hatch, hood doesnt matter and practice on that before you hit your car with paint. This way you can get the paint mixture right and learn how to spray at the same time. Just flow it from side to side dont hover in one spot, do a very light "tack or mist" coat first then lay it on a couple of times.

There is your crash course in how to primer so good luck!

Seriously, don't ever use a spray bomb or especially any type of roller cause you will never be happy with it! check out my build under the New Zealand FD in interior/ exterior.
