I'd recommend JL Audio. I have a 10" W7 and two JL Amps and my system sounds amazing! Of course my speakers are pretty damn good too and the headunit, which is all necessary to help bring the sound system together.

jL is probably the best bang for buck, I cant help but preach ALPINE, my favorite company and the absolute best in my opinion quality, they have entry level stuff and expensive stuff all sounds good. I have worked for a number of audio shops as well and can tell you it is not always product but install, placement and tuning of audio to get what you want.

I back this opinion. I bought an Alpine amp, can't remember the model #, over 8 years ago. Granted I didn't really test it's limits much but it's still going strong powering the pair of Boston 10's that I bought at the same time.

What's wrong with MTX? I've been running 2 MTX 12s powered by a Rockford Fosgate amp for the better part of 6 years now.

Ah, I didn't realize they went down the crapper. I'm not much of an audiophile myself, I was just surprised to hear MTX being critisized so heavily since I remember them being one of the better affordable names.

hmm I just noticed you said the amp is turning off at high volume this doesnt mean your sub is bad it is probably your amp going into protect mode because it is getting to hot and your just noticing now since its summer. Make sure your amp can get air to it and maybe check your ground make sure it is good.

Well MTX is not crap, but I think its that the guy who had this installed didnt estimate the power rating and all that. My first car I had a rockford 12'' sub in a ported box, and rockford amp, and only problem I had was the bass cutting out at high volumes, and that was because my fuse was too cheap and crappy and it had a short ( not a problem with the amp or sub).I abused them everyday for over a year no problem. The problem I have is that my sub self destructed, I abuse my speakers everyday, so I need something built strong. My woofer is blown for sure it rattles now when bass kicks in,when it did not do this before. and yes my amp is not powerful enough to handle the power at high volumes, it gets too hot then cuts out. I never had a problem with Rockford amps or subs so when I can afford it im getting the 8'' Rockford stage 2 woofer with dual 4 ohm voice coils. I dont need a 10'' or 12'' just something small with a lot a power.

Ok so I finally got around to buying the 8'' Rockford Sub I wanted and WOW does it pound! I got some tuning done tonight and made it sound a lot better. I also noticed that the bass sounded deeper and cleaner when I covered the ported hole, and insulated the inside. Does anybody know the best place to buy things like subwoofer enclosure insulation and carpet?

Sorry to say, Alpine subs are ****. I love the older Fosgate stuff, but their whole lineup is **** now. MTX? hahaha dont get me started on their stuff. Alpine does make a decent head unit. MBs older stuff was good for sq. Their new stuff is just **** though. JL audio is overpriced ****. I do like some of thier amps, but again, if I spent the money for them, I would be pissed. Their 13w7 big boy speaker is a joke. Along witht he RFL. My best advice would be to get some older audio. The new stuff is built in korea or china etc. Grap up some good ole american Orion or Fosgate stuff. Not their new stuff though because again, its crap except the new HCCA. But then again, its crap compaired to the older gens. Check out the ebay seller robotunderground. They buy old stock parts from the high end people and build their own for dirt cheap. Excellent sq and able to handle loads of power.

I heard a lot of people saying that the old Rockford stuff was way better quality, and I dont doubt that at all. Well the reason why I decide to stick with Rockford is from personal experience.

My first car a 99 Mercury Cougar, I had a Rockford 12'' sub/w Rockford enclosure and a 200 Watt Rockford Amp. That may not sound like much power, but I'll tell you... It hit HARD! On the outside you couldnt hear the bass too much from far away, but on the inside it was very tight, clean, and it hit all the lowest bass notes you can throw at it. I had that system for 2 years blasting my bass everywhere I went with Zero problems. Even when I sold the car, the subwoofer didn't show any signs of wear and tear at all, maby a light scratch here and there.

Im not looking for bass that will make my ears bleed, just bass that will sound deep and rich on the inside. Plus I think the bass I had in my old car was actually too much, thats why I decided to go with an 8'' cause I dont wanna go deaf by the time im 25

thats not a magnet, its a plastic cover. Remove to and you will get the truth.

also just so you know, thats not older fosagte stuff. The reason why you go alot of bass out of that setup was the vented box. Despite my hate of new fosgate stuff, the p2 is alot better than the p1. It will last you for a while. It should make great midbass.

Actually thats not a plastic cover, thats the actual magnet. The reason why I know, is because when I set the sub down, all the screws stuck to it like glue and I had to pry them off

Also, I know that with a sealed enclosure and a smaller sub, my bass wont be as loud as my 12'' Rockford I had before but then again, thats the point. I also like techno and fast beat type music, which is why I decided to go sealed box for more accurate bass. I'll take pics of everything when it's done
