How to paint Flat Black???

I'm looking to add a flat black accent to my RX-2 when I'm finished with the bodywork and want to know the best way to do it. If you clear over flat, does it look glossy, or maybe semigloss? Can anyone tell me how to do it and get it to look right?

well...there WAS an issue of SCC where they painted their WRX flat black...i believe they didn't use any clear coat at all. It seems like if you use clear coat and it does become glossy...what would be the point?

Do a search....this has come up before. A member on here had truck painted flat black. It's a special paint that dupont makes I believe.....and they even have a special clearcoat that gives it that flat black finish.

I know it's been discussed, and the reason I ask is because I'm not painting the CAR flat black, just a stripe. I'd like to clear over the flat black so it'll be waxable and washable, and will also let me lightly blend the yellow and black, but I don't want to put a gloss to it. Thanks for the help - I'll go lookin. BTW, the idea is to do a vertical stripe around the tail like an old Super Bee.

Yes, it is a satin clearcoat you will use.

Okay, my real question then comes back to the finish of the stripe and the rest of the body. As I understand it, I'll need to have a satin clearcoat on the stripe and normal clear on the rest of the car, but then how do I smooth it all out? I'd spray the black portion and satin-clear it, then mask it off and spray the yellow and its clear. But now I have yellow between my satin clear and regular clear, so could I blend the two clears with layers of yellow between them? If I spray the car with regular clear, but with satin-clear already on the stripe, would it all come out glossy? Thanks for y'all's help, by the way.

The advice from my local painter was to paint both the yellow and black, leave the black masked, and spray a satin clear. Then mask the sttripe and clear the rest of the body, that way you can sand the two clears flush with each other, once you figure in a few coats of clear for the regular paint.

SCC is one of the better magazines out there. Have you even seen the competition? They are all trying to be Maxim/FHM/Stuff.

Read Technobabble. It is probably one of the most informative and non-numbing editor articles ever. It makes sense, isn't cheesy and is fun to read.
