I've ripped apart the dash to finally get into the head unit, but I can't see how to get the thing out

There are a pair of clips that slide into the 2 tiny holes on each side of the head unit. Insert the clips, push inward (or is it outward) left to right to release the locking mechanism, slide it out.

You can buy the clips at your local auto parts store. Should be the same ones used for a Ford or Mazda.

I had to give up, took it to an installer. They didn't need to take the dash apart, on either side of the headunit are removable strips (run vertically), just pull them out and stick in the release pins.

turns out it took 5 secs to get the bloody thing out.

For future reference for others:

Remove the side tabs on unit:

Use the following tool (available for under $5 in most auto parts stores and at your local Walmarts, etc.)

Then insert into the open holes and push outward on the tool while pulling the Headunit toward you.
