how do you move a radar detectors antenna?
i have a cheap radar detector and i have it mounted behind my pass side air vent. so my question is, had anyone removed an antenna from one and relocated it/ its not the 2 piece, the antennas actually in the box, any tips?
um... you do realise it doesnt use antennas right? it uses ir sensors to see the certain signals they shoot off your car. thats why sometimes they go crazy whenyou drive by publix and a door happens to be opening.
Why the hell would you want to take the antenna out of the radar detector and put it somewhere else. Your supposed to just mount the detector where you want it to be... If you want to mount the antenna on the front of your car then I suggest you buy a radar detector kit pre made for that with the sensors to mount on the license plate holders. Or just get a Valentine One and mount it in the center of your windshield right below the rear view mirror where most radar detectors should be mounted.
IR sensors would be for the Laser detection part of a Radar\Laser detector. Radar detectors detect radio microwaves with an antenna.
The reason why a radar detector goes crazy when you drive by a store with automatic doors is because they use small radar sensors to detect the person walking towards the door. Usually no matter if the door is opening or not these sensors are constantly shooting radar. So when you drive by your detector should always go off.

i want it behind the grill of my pass vent because be they legal or not if you do get stopped try talking out of that one, a detector will almost guarentee you a ticket, cops get some weird satisfaction out of catching people with em

btw, its tapped into my exterior lights, i turn the know one click my detector and dash lights are on, 2 clicks my headlights are up, it works perfect, you cant even tell its there if you dont already know
Ive got an escort solo that i bought when i had my vette cuz the dash was so long i didnt want to deal with a cord. But i put mine right above the drivers side of the rear view mirror and this way its right below the tinting on the windshield so it gets a good reading. Its higher so it can pick things up easier. And most importantly it cant be seen unless your sitting in the car.

Radar detectors use a microwave horn antenna (most of them, anyway). It's often integrated into the case and into the PCB the electronics is built on. Unless you are a very experienced electronics guy I don't think you have any chance of removing it. There are at least two radar detectors I've seen that have remote antennas.
Alternatively, get a Valentine 1 and the remote light kit. Hide the V1 at the headliner around the rear view mirror and mount the light remote in the ashtray. There are plastic "roof consoles" you can find in auto parts stores you can hide the detector in. You do want it to have openings ahead and behind so the laser detector will still work. It's not a cheap solution but very effective, and you'd have the best protection money can buy.
I clip my V1 to the inside edge of the passenger visor right beside the rearview mirror - cable is run above the visor and down the inside of the "A" piller plastic. It's very hard to see the detector from outside the car and it is very sensitive in that position.
