Headrest speakers w/aftermarket head unit

Hello all, I have a question about my convertible audio...

The OEM Pioneer head unit went bad about 12 years ago. I had a Kenwood KDC-x711 installed in it's place.

When installed, the sales/installer told me that he could route the rear speakers to my headrest speakers (which is important on a convertible), but he would have to bypass the central headrest control panel.

If possible, I would like to get that function back.

In order to change the volume for the headrest now, I must access the head unit menu and fiddle with selections and buttons. With my current eyesight, that is getting to be a dangerous proposition - trying to read a menu and press the right small buttons while whizzing down the road.

Does anyone know how I can add the central control panel back into the system so that the volume of the front speakers still comes directly from the head unit and the headrest speakers go through the central panel to the headrests with an independent volume level - easily changed by thumbing the panel volume switch up or down - independently for the driver and the passenger?
