Smile Head units that will fit an FD

Crutchfield's site says that the depth maximum for an aftermarket HU is 6 5/8". The one I was looking at is 7"... Can anyone please confirm their own experience so that I can choose a new HU?

My car currently has a broken Bose, but I don't think that should matter.

Thanks for any help!

I was able to fit the dual do everything deck in my car, crotchfield says it will not fit but w/o the bracket it does, i think its a 6225? in any case, if you drill out 2 little spot welds on a small bracket behind the factory deck you can fit a lot deeper hu in there. its not a hack job, and if for some bizzare reason you wanted to put the stock unit back it will go back in without the bracket, or you could put the bracket back in pretty easily with 2 screws

Hey t.J.

Was it the Dual XHD6425? The HD radio? That is the exact one I want to put in! If it is, how do you like it? Are you running an amp?

Thanks for replying!

thats the one, it fits. sounds good to me, running with the remainder of the stock bose system. heres a pic of the panel I put above it (I actually did all this just to get the guages out from a bracket I made that had them between the back of the steering wheel and the speedo) I'm trying to find a pic of the head installed, but in this pic you can see the bottom of the little bracket that needs to be removed poking down onto the carpet

you can't beat the price of that unit, I think I paid like 135 at best buy after looking at crutchfield. you do need the adapter box, and I had to crank it (the box) up to the max to get proper volume out of the HU, probably because it has a relatively low voltage output. note my adapter box had a bad crimp in one of the connectors, so check it first if you have any problems.

Personally I would shell a little bit more of money and get a better quality hu, dual units are junk.

Thanks Tom! That unit has great user reviews on Crutchfield so I'll go for it. I'm still trying to decide if I'm going to remove the Bose door speakers and use some Polks. My rear Bose died ages ago and I'm going to build the Damon SW box.

I see your FD looks like mine I have a black one with the tan interior. Thanks again!

that hu will sound as good or better than the stock unit with the stock bose setup. I contemplated new speakers, amp etc, and if I was going to do that I'd probably have gotten an alpine hi end unit. for the amount of time I use the stereo it asn't worth the expense of the whole hi end setup. I actually came close to just removing it all permanently (I have no ac or ps either)

I was thinking of keeping the Bose door and center speaker but just the other day there has been a loud squeal coming from the speakers. I thought it was the center amp and removed the center speaker...still did it. Then I found an interesting thing...it only happens on FM but not AM radio. I'm wondering now if it's just the radio. Anyway, since I haven't had the rear Bose for a long time I am going to build a sub box anyway so I'm thinking it might be just less trouble to replace the whole thing.

Thanks Tom.

Yeah Dual's aren't that great. Step up the big leagues, and get an Eclipse. I loved mine until some jackhole decided to steal it.
